"He who rules with his left, rules the world" is an awesome quote highlighting the importance of the jab. So many great champions had good jabs: Ali, Robinson, Holmes, Mayweather, Whitaker, etc.

The jab is the foundation for so many styles and helps a boxer with so many situations: range finding, setting up combinations, keeping a guy at bay, countering, scoring points, etc. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say it's arguably the most important punch in the sport.

But were there any dominant champions who had bad or straight up terrible jabs...???

If you mean form wise? These guys were all effective with an “ugly” poke or severely limited the use of the punch…. Marciano was reserved to ever really throw one but for a reason… and when he did it didn’t look great. Gene Fullmers was hideous but effective, Mickey Walker didn’t use one often - they don’t overly qualify for “dominant champs” besides Marciano but Fullmer and Walker were 100% legit monsters. Armstrong too actually, his jab wasn’t really there or conventional - something that should go without saying, something for even short fighters who are seen as having less use of a jab then taller opponents… when breaking distance it’s better to jab then not, never understood why more short guys don’t jab there way in look at Fighting Harada.

I don't mean that the jab "looks" ugly, I mean that their jab isn't very effective at doing what it's supposed to do: racking up points, setting up combinations, range finding, etc.

A crappy ineffective jab, plain and simple. Not "ugly but effective".

Can you name many champs or even contenders at all who had noticeably ineffective jabs?

He wasn’t necessarily dominant but Max Baer didn’t have much semblance of a jab.

Crazy considering a god given reach of 82”.

I feel very secure in saying if Max had also employed a reasonably well educated jab, he could’ve gone that bit further than he did.

I agree that the jab is the King of punches and a well executed and broadly utilised jab is an absolute joy to witness.

I guess that's another thing Baer had in common with his successor Wilder. Both had wiry frames with long arms, yet for some bizarre reason neglected the jab and were obsessed with landing their nuclear right hands.

So Walker, Marciano and Armstrong? I’m not sure of anyone who used a bad jab and used it even if it was ineffective? if they did jab a lot they probably wouldn’t have gone very far and been a dominant champ hence why Walker, Armstrong and Marciano didn’t really jab and used other things to make up for it or built a style around limitations which is what champions do I suppose.

Marciano's chicken wing, thalidomide baby arm jab was something to behold.

Seamus never fails to appreciate Marciano's artistry.

To be fair, Wilder made great use of his jab in the beginning of his stand as WBC titlist. Stiverne and Duhaupas fight can be examples of him fightining on the back foot with an effective jab. I think he was jabbing pretty well in his Molina fight too.

I was surprised when I saw the first Stiverne fight. The lead up to the fight, everyone kept raving about his power, and then Wilder calmly circled around him with a good, steady jab. Reminds me of Ruddock actually, crazy that the two of them fell in love with their power and abandoned a tool that might've helped them become ATGs.

    Roy. Jones. Junior.

I know - he actually threw somewhat okay jabs against Vinny Paz from memory but he was dominant and didn't really use his jab in the traditional way, favouring the lead left hook and right hand leads.
