Found this interesting gem on FB:

“Former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano visited the training camp of Sonny Liston as Liston trained to take on heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson in 1962.

According to onlookers, Liston was in a bad mood and initially ignored Marciano.

"Hiyah, Sonny," Marciano said, reaching out his hand.

"Uh... hiyah," Liston flatly responded, refusing the handshake.

Marciano dropped in to interview Liston for a pre-fight segment meant to be played before the broadcast of the fight. Liston refused to be interviewed and yelled at people in the gym.

After Liston walked away, Marciano said to onlookers, "He shouldn't be this way. I know how it is when you're waiting for a big bout which means so much. But you never forget to be nice to people."

Someone on Liston's team insisted he do the interview, and after another outburst, Liston slowly walked over to Marciano and answered all of his questions with brief, emotionless single words and was done in less than a minute. And then Liston walked back to be alone.

Marciano went to leave and an onlooker said, "You should have belted him one!"

Marciano clenched his fists and replied, "Maybe it would have. But while it has been tempting when they ask me to come back, all of that is behind me now."

I've never read or heard about this meeting of the two. It sounds legit. Do you know the original source?

Liston was always a POS from what I’ve read of him, unsurprising to see he lacks basic manners.

I love that Rocky was always gentle and respectful; also, he was not intimidated by Liston's size, look, or the hype created by fans.

Rocky was respectful, but he was sure to have the balls to fight anyone anytime if he needed to.

If he were in his prime, he would be a problem for Liston, regardless of the outcome.

Nice article here. A troubled, somewhat vulnerable man with a surpringly gentle side and, like many of his ilk, a strong sense of justice, sometimes expressed in a rather binary way, and without much self awareness.

It's done the rounds in here numerous times. I'll have a look for an old thread later.

This is the original UPI report from 1962. Basically the same as the FB article, just a slightly longer version.

I swear I've heard this story five different ways. In UNBEATEN, they wrote it up that Liston started taunting Marciano and said, "what would happen if we fought? I'd hit you and you wouldn't hit me..." and Marciano wanted to fight him there in the gym.

I swear, although I can't source it, that someone on here posted that someone asked them who would win in a fight, and Marciano deferentially said, "I don't know, Sonny is pretty big." At which point Liston said, "I could take him," and Marciano got all bent out of shape.

Maybe I'm just going nuts but it seems like every time I hear the story it's completely different.

I won't read your posts anymore if this one is indicative of what you're going to bring us.

Geez, I better mend my vile ways then. Clearly this could be the end of the road for me.
