Donaire getting impatient and just begins to smack Campos around the ring with looping rights. Campos panicking, scooting away, jabbing for dear life. Donaire with some hooks on the body. Campos runs into a jab on the bridge of the nose and blinks, then retreats in a jerky rhythm with his guard down in a half-assed ducking motion. Horrible defensive instincts against such a precise hitter as Donaire. I smell a highlight reel KO sooner than later.

Donaire ripping left hooks downstairs. Taking his time closing the gap when Campos runs. Donaire wasting little of his energy, measuring with a half-speed jab, barely moving when Campos jumps in to flurry, just melting off to his side with a shoulder popped up to intercept. Donaire looking very relaxed and predatory in there. Left hook and straight right combos by Donaire have Campos hurt and running. Campos tries shelling up but Donaire keeps teeing off. Campos tries clinching but Donaire shoves at him and keeps peppering hooks on the body. Campos obviously terrified, nudging Donaire in the chest with a jab and then darting outside again, bobbing a few times, and starting to jab again downstairs but thinking better and pulling it. Campos knows he's a flush counter away from Q St.

Clean sweep in the first half. Donaire has zero excuse to let this go a full twelve. He's in with a kid who's terrified of him, unable to do much defensively but tie up and run, and offensively gormless. Just stay in close and pound him into dust. Easy-peasy.

 

This is actually sadder than watching Diego Gabriel Cháves struggle to a draw with a nobody last night, even though Donaire is far less shot. At least with La Joya he was always hot & cold, got hit too much, and fought to his opposition's level.

Any version of Donaire before today would have already gotten rid of as outclassed an opponent as Campos by now.

I feel so goddamned old. I've lived long enough to see a Nonito Donaire unable to pull trigger and finish the job - with Omar Narváez's kid on the undercard as salt on the wound.
