Can being a southpaw make a difference when using the shoulder roll?

Thabiso is a southpaw and uses shoulder roll. He started very good, but declined later in career, now he is a step stone. He had some good moves.

Possibly. Floyd abandoned it though, didn't he? You give up a lot of hand fighting with that lead hand by your side, and there are different angles to drill. Personally I mostly switch to fencing/high-guard when fighting southpaws instead of working out of the crossguard.

It’s a move used to make you reach… it’s much more head movement then trying to parry a shot up close, yes it still works in regards to making someone “reach” Toney did it fine.

If I am a southpaw and I fight out of that posture I would not be interested at all in hand fighting. I would deliberately get my right foot inside his left foot and let him jab because he isn't going to hit me with it, and his hook is behind me. Basically, I am now fighting just his right hand.

    Only against another southpaw.

We just saw Morrell try to shoulder roll against Kattaev and BOOM!

James Toney made it work very well against Jirov.

As a southpaw, I only liked doing this when on the inside.. Shoulder bumps into left hands (straight or bent arm shots) worked well, and I felt like I could smother well with it…

Even still, I almost always would maintain a normal guard on the inside, but there are some interesting angles and tricks the shoulder roll / half guard offers up close.

Zab Judah would do it and mop people with the left uppercut from mid-range - I wasnt athletically gifted enough to even try that as much as I loved watching it.
