The forum has taken a real downturn in terms of petty squabbling, name-calling, making meatballs and probably alts. I'm as hands off as I can possibly be on the forum but it's reached a point now.

Petty Squabbling: Endless arguments where posters bounce form thread to thread carrying old arguments over from one thread to the next to try to score points/win/whatever it is.

Name-Calling: Putting other posters down personally, calling them names to try to provoke or release tension, whatever it might be.

Making Meatballs: This is the most insidious type of posting and it usually emits from posters who have had warnings. They think that by posting around their "enemies" post, or by talking to a third person and saying all the things they want to about "certain people" or "certain types of poster" without quoting them directly or naming them nothing will be moderated; picking up arguments where other posters have left off; indirect forms of trolling and squabbling to try to prompt the other person or scores points against them are other forms.

Alts: I try extremely hard not to ban accounts for alts unless I have direct proof but it's reached a point. If you are running an alt consider quietly parking it. Note that it's not just alt accounts that get permabanned.

These and other forms of petty behaviour are ruining the forum for long-term members and making it less attractive to new ones. I try to ignore this stuff as far as I can, but starting now i'm going to issue short bans then long bans for repeat offenders. There are one or two who are on the very edge of a perma-ban. Please moderate your own behaviour, this will mean you aren't going to catch a ban, but if you engage in this stuff recreationally, might be time to move on. If you want to keep posting here and post this kind of stuff, I will just ban you. Being clever about it will just get you a longer ban.

The danger here is that someone innocent gets caught in the crossfire  I don't apologise for that, because it's reached a point where that's just the lesser evil. Please try to stay away from petty squabbling and name-calling for a bit because while that's been allowed here generally speaking, it's not now.

This type of intervention here is usually not required and hopefully it will be very temporary, but that's not up to me.

People keep posting in this thread to make jokes or ask for information around other posters who have been banned, which i've been deleting.

If you want to know about why a poster has been banned, ask them when (if) they come back or follow in the instructions in the Rules Thread in General.

If you want to tell funny jokes, maybe find somewhere else to tell them.

I was going to ask what “making meatballs” meant. I appreciate the clarification.

"downturn in terms of petty squabbling"?

Since Mendoza and McVey have moved their arguments to a different scene this place has been like a hippie love fest in comparison to when they were in here.

Sorry to inform you I'm still here.Mendoza moved to Boxing Scene and was banned there last week.
In the interests of harmony,I won't post anything further on the Marciano or Liston threads ,the latter was predictably turned into a Marciano thread anyway.
Its my Wife's and my Anniversary today, we have had a lovely afternoon with friends at their bungalow, eating and drinking in the sun, listening to music and recollecting old times.

    Peace and Love to All.

Mac you are a great poster but Mendoza always put you on a crazy train for some reason.

The Scene is a dead place now.

Repeat this post to yourself and it could be written from me to you - I wish you a great upcoming Independence day brother, I’ll be celebrating it here on the prison colony.

...can I ask why @AntonioMartin1's perfectly fine "this forum lately" thread got deleted? Or if that wasn't you, do you know who did so and why?

There was some good, respectful productive chat in there. It really didn't rate deletion and the subject was brought up in a way that, I'm sure, wasn't meant to be attacking this place so much as questioning why the status quo HW obsession, a point that has been raised by many Classic regulars over the years. If nothing else, I suppose migrate it downstairs into the Lounge if not boxing-centric enough, but...it's a meta thread about boxing nerds and how to parse out the space, and how much bandwidth to allocate for which divisions. Fits well enough here as many other meta threads which get left alone. But outright sniping it? With several of my high-quality posts down the drain? Nah, won't do.

I will try to leave my 2 cents in the most civil way possible.

If the mods want to ban someone for name calling or dragging arguments on for multiple threads, fine. I actually don't have a problem with this at all.

The elephant in the room is what led up to the squabbling in the first place. The mods don't seem to pay much attention to some of the more heated discussions and how they get derailed. It is quite frequently the same handful of individuals who do this arguing in bad faith, and the mods know who they are. I'm not perfect by any means and I'm not trying to insinuate the forum would be a paradise without these people or that they should go. An echo chamber is boring.

But at the same time, a chaotic wild west where the mods only step in to play clean up is equally uninspiring. To put it bluntly, the forum as a whole is incredibly underdeveloped on an intellectual level when it comes to holding some sort of standards in a debate/discussion. People will intentionally or unintentionally use red herrings, deflections, fail to backup their claims, filibuster, etc. Since the mods rarely seem to regulate these things, some posters such as myself at least attempt to keep these things under control in order to have a more cohesive discussion.

Calling someone out for refusing to answer a question is not flame baiting.

Calling someone out for lying should not be a criminal offense.

Calling someone out for derailing or arguing in bad faith should be something the whole forum can get behind.

Should these call outs be done with insults? No, and I take accountability for going overboard in this regard. I'm not justifying it, but in the absence of regulation for deliberate behavior that leads to bringing down the overall quality of the forum, I'm not sure what the mods expect us to do. Just accept that it's next to impossible to have an honest conversation about boxing and that a good thread can get ruined?

I've rambled enough and made myself clear to anyone who gives a damn about this issue. As for solutions, well, it should be obvious. I've never been a mod or ran a forum, but to me it's common sense to penalize intentional logic fallacies and negative disingenuous behavior that kills the vibe. I would also suggest entertaining the idea of having "formal debates" with a panel of judges where people can attempt to resolve controversial ongoing heated topics such as the quality of Rocky's opposition, Leonard vs Hagler, etc.

I really don't think I'll be sticking around if we keep having more mud slinging threads in classic. General forum is already embarrassing enough, we're supposed to be better than this.

For what it is worth I generally think very highly of you and your knowledge, even if we disagree about Marciano and Liston. Happy anniversary.

For my part I have been trying to be good, lately.
