You have a skilled but undersized contender in the late 1950s.

How do you prepare him to fight and hopefully beat Sonny Liston?
How would you prepare him to deal with the physical strength , the massive reach and sheer presence of the champ in waiting?

Strategically pay your mafia contact to get Liston kneecapped.

Or just explain to Liston's mafia handlers what a killing they could make letting your guy win.

I love this kind of thread - what sort of chin has he got on him? Compare it to someone? what’s his reach, height, weight etc because undersized could mean Zora Folley or it could mean Dwight Qawi lol or Harold Johnson sized…

And how does he fight? Any 30s thru 60s stylistic equivalents to this guy?

    Anyway, on the training front:

He will be hydrated, putting him on a better nutritional footing than Foreman, Norton, and any other period heavyweight who dehydrated himself.

The actual food from this period might be better overall. Fewer weird chemicals, although I guess some of the pesticides might be of the "make you grow a third eye" variety.

Billy Conn is a small fighter, had the chin, had the speed and the skills if we just grabbed Conn it’d be certain defeat for Liston a guy with a Toney (almost) chin - 40lbs lighter then Ali with real, educated legs and an ability to fight at all ranges the way I see it he’d get beat up pretty bad he’s too slow and basic, same thing would happen with Ezzard Charles if he’d had his legs and other great 175-190lbs fighters. I don’t think Toney would beat Liston before anyone asks again.

Here's what we do. Have him wear his trunks high - like somewhere around his neck - and the minute Liston goes to the body, perform an acting job that would make Meryl Streep blush, with the hopes of winning on a DQ.

Like a few other contemporaries of Liston, Henry Cooper and his manager Jim Wicks devised the perfect strategy for Liston - simply don’t fight him.

Hell, if they even saw Sonny approaching on the same side of the street, Enry and Jim’s contingent plan was to immediately cross to the other side.

    Chin like Holyfield
Pretty good Chin, up till now he has a perfect record of 34 -0 , and he s never been shaken up, Hurt or dropped yet.
    He's 5-11 and a little over 190 pounds.

Easy answer. Lure Sonny to Las Vegas. Then wait about a year maybe 18 months.

It be like shooting fish in a barrel.

I'm pretty sure pro-athletes today are spending the money for actually clean food.
