Discussing his second fight with Marciano, Roland Lastarza said his trainer Dan Florio ruined him. Lastarza trained for 3 months in the summertime for the rematch and he stated it killed him.He said he was ready for the fight two months before it happened, that Florio worked him to death and he lost weight steadily, coming into the ring several pounds under his ideal weight. Any thoughts on this?
Personally I think during training you reach a point where you're ready and a good trainer will recognize that , though Ray Arcel once said ,there's no such thing as being over trained.
Jimmy De Angelo Lastarza's manager had a heart attack and wasnt able to oversee his progress .I never heard of Arcel saying that though DonTurner did,but then Turner says a lot of things.Archie Moore said he was overtrained for Patterson.
LaStarza wasn't a novice; surely he could have trained properly. Or if he didn't, that's on him. Sounds like an excuse to me.
Probably bull****, LaStarza was around the weight he was always at, and looked in good shape while not overly lean or deficient in any way. His face and muscle bellies were full. Its a good mindset of an athlete to have to say they werent at their best, it helps maintain confidence
Lastarza was184 3/4lbs he hadn't been that light for 4 years, he was nearly 6 lbs lighter than he had been against Layne in his previous fight.
6lbs is legit nothing and being less light and mobile against marciano wouldve just been a further death sentence, LaStarza was never going to match marciano in strength even if he came in at 200lbs. He died in that ring when his feet stopped moving.
I’m torn, LaStarza may have been 189-190 in the years following the Marciano fight but maybe this was not his optimal weight due to the competition? He went down in weight against Dan Bucceroni in both of their fights so maybe he felt it was necessary to go down for his bigger fights? Is there a source for the quote?
Six lbs can mean quite a lot.Lastarza would never try and match Marciano for strength, but he felt he was stale in that fight. He never suggested that's why he lost, and I'm not doing that now ,I'm just putting the info out there.
@mcvey fighters used to come in lighter for certain opponents all the time, after his first bout with the Rock maybe he fought a more nimble approach would benefit him? and this is a convenient BS excuse, yeah 6lbs is nothing if you're training for the fight of your life.
Lastarza did not deliberately come in lighter for Marciano he claims his trainer worked him to death! If anything Rollie would have chosen to be heavier for Marciano. Lastarza gave his honest opinion of what happened, there's no need to construct an alternative fantasy, nobody is attacking Marciano.
Bull s*** lol it’s not about Marciano but every fighters always got some reason they lost… Ali’s jaw was broken in the 2nd round vs Norton, Duran had the runs against Leonard and Liston took a dive! - Foreman’s water was bad, Roy Jones lost too much muscle it’s RUBBISH most of the time, just like here - “I trained too hard” = I lost despite being in good shape lol now stop being a wind up merchant, takes one to know one.
I made a thread I thought the forum might find interesting.I didn't give my own opinion ,I don't have one.Stop being such a child!
