Shavers hadn't really warmed up and was caught early before he could really land any heavy artillery. The fight was over in under a round. Quarry just overwhelmed him with flurries before he could even get into the fight. Quarry stopped and even dropped by lesser lesser punchers such as Frazier and Chuvalo. If Shavers landed the same number of shots as those two across several rounds, Quarry would be in the morgue.
I read an article that as Shavers's level of opposition went up his knockout percentage went down. That misses the forest for the trees. It only means the competition was better at avoiding his bombs, not eating them.
He landed some good shots, Quarry ate them then landed his right hand and it was over. Rarely did Shavers warm up that was a guy who came out to bomb you. Ali was dropped by and nearly stopped by Enry Cooper if only Shavers landed as many punches as Enry… Chuvalo stoppage was BS, dropped sure but he was waiting to pop up and got counted out.
Shavers himself said he hasn't fully warmed up in the post fight interview. Argue with him if you want.
Hey, don't let any sources that disagree with your agenda get in the way. You can always just cherry pick.
Frazier isn't going to walk through Shavers's missiles. But just because Shavers was a huge puncher (which he was) does not mean that every punch he threw was a big punch. Even big punchers mistime shots. Sometimes even huge hitters are unable to properly put leverage into their punches. Shavers was also very very wild. Watch the time he knocks down Holmes. As soon as Holmes gets up, Shavers follow through punches were so wide, sloppy and wild that he was essentially making Wilder look like Joe Louis when it came to punching techniques. Shavers could badly hurt Frazier early. However, given that Frazier had good head movement, he likely will land a big left hook on Shavers. Foreman took away Frazier's left hook by blocking or evading them. Shavers would be a sitting duck for Frazier's left hook. I doubt Shavers had the chin Foreman did either. 10-20 percent chance that Shavers catches him and stops Frazier early. 80-90 % chance that while Shavers hurts Frazier, he is too wild on the follow up, that he gets hurt by Frazier's left hook and gets stopped.
“Agenda” that is the most misused word on this forum LOL - I’m sorry I don’t listen to every fighters excuse without genuine evidence, seemed fine in the fight but I suppose I should believe everything as gospel against my own eyes.
You know for years I have heard that Quarry just blitzed Shavers and didn't let him land a bomb on him, hence why the fight was over so quick. Then I actually watched the match and saw Shavers comfortably ahead landing bomb after bomb on Quarry, only for Quarry to just shake them off and KO Shavers almost immediately once he started connecting his own power-shots. Shavers gotta be the most overrated puncher I have ever seen in my life. He had one good punch in his arsenal. An overhand right he literally jumped across the ring with his body leant forward when he threw, sacrificing any kind of balance and long-term stamina he had (though admittedly he was surprisingly accurate with it). Other than that, any punch he threw was just hard. Same way somebody like Norton or Frazier hit hard.
Ron Stander rocked Frazier. Earnie could certainly take him out. But he has to get that punch in before he gets smoked. Don't think it happens
To the alt : here's what actually happened ... Shavers overexcited and foolishly came out recklessly bombing, did not land one shot flush , Quarry countered him fast and furious, stunned him and finished him ... to say Shavers was not a monster puncher is ignorant of fact .. Right hand at 2:01. Bodyshot - Left Hook - Right Hand combo at 2:20 right before commentary says "Shavers scoring heavily". Stiff jab - two bodyshots at around 2:30. Hold/Hit uppercuts between 2.35-2.40. Another stiff jab at 2.45. He landed about as much as most boxers do in the first round and was leading on the score before he got caught and put out. And no Im not an alt, I just joined recently. Shavers was a big puncher, just not nearly the biggest, not even close. Most of his KO victims were barely above 200 lbs if at all and his power seemed to disappear above that.
Where did he land flush and full ? Not a jab or a shot , a bomb ? Answer .. he didn't ... what he did was fight stupid against the wrong guy ... Quarry is overrated by many in my opinion with the greatest to never win a title argument but that said he was tough as nails, fearless, had a terrific chin and was a hell of a counter puncher , a true experienced pro with very good power ..
First right hand rocked Quarry's head back. So did the jabs. Quarry was backing up the whole time as well, clearly he felt something. Shavers rarely landed something 100% flush anyway, this was quite close to his normal power level during a fight and Quarry handled it just fine.
