I don't like him as a person, but I can't begrudge him for walking away. It's like Lennox Lewis did after a close shave with Vitali. There's always going to be another contender. I wish he would have done what GSP did, though, and not tried to hold the belt hostage. He exposed how scared he was of Tom, and it was just a really bad look to end his career on. You can detract from his legacy for the PED use (personally I think basically everybody in professional sports is on something), but you can't really deny that he was a tremendous fighter. He'll definitely go down as one of the most hated champions in the sport's history, though. I think that's set in stone.

The comparison with Bowe is a bit off. Bowe was in his prime and had only one really top win. Jones is soon 38 and has achieved a tremendous amount, already GOAT probably.

With that said, he has basically been holding the title hostage since winning it. If he wasn't ready to face the best challengers out there he should just have relinquished it. A totally shot Stipe as only defence in more than two years is a bad way to finish.

 

In terms of legacy it was a bit off, since Jones had a legendary run before even coming to HW and Bowe had little besides beating Holy, but I agree that Jones conduct as a champion was even worse.

As for the PED use.... It's a fair point that it at least diminish his legacy, yes. I tend to take the more cynical view that everyone is on them, but it is true that far from everyone has tested positive, so it's fair to hold that against him. The eye poking etc is for the refs, though.

 

Who ****ing cares.. Jones is a fat old guy as a heavyweight… fans clamoring for this just want to see the guy lose and enjoy the deck being heavily stacked against him…ironically, the only way anyone can see him losing….. as if it’s a bold prediction to say a much younger, and much bigger prime guy can beat him… it would mean nothing…

The issue with the belt is on Dana and the UFC, more so than Jones..

@Bokaj bingo, everyone is one PEDs. Especially in the UFC, where most of the guys cut 20+ pounds of weight, maintain the physiques of mini-bodybuilders, and almost never show any signs of depletion….

 

You’re showing your true colors again. Jones is above both those guys. Dude is 40 and fought everyone in his prime. You just so desperately want to see him lose. If he beat Aspinall who doesn’t even have an exceptional resume, it wouldn’t even improve his resume by much and you would all not give him the credit he deserves.

 

Jones might be the GOAT lightheavyweight but he didn't prove squat at heavyweight. And his style was really dirty with all the sneaky eye poking stuff he used to do with his thumb. And really at lightheavyweight he had a few controversial fights that could have gone the other way like Gustavson and Reyes. I don't care about the peds stuff coz let's face it they're all at it where that's concerned but Jones was a big old diva the way he kept getting away with multiple infractions scott free. If your gonna play the game do it by the rules.
