I like Moorer but agree that he is certainly not a slam dunk for the hall of fame. I happy for him that he got in but I can think of some other guys that are more deserving.
HOF doesn’t necessarily mean ATG, people don’t get put in only on achievements, it’s often based on how they’re remembered by fans, Jerry Quarry being another example, obviously legacy comes into it, but it’s more of a list of criteria. Moorer obviously had some solid wins, and on top of that, he was an entertaining fighter in entertaining fights, but with skill at the same time.
14 world title wins 2 weight division champion. Not an amazing resume but statistically he has good numbers.
I am reminded of something Moorer was meant to have said and did. "When man sleeps in the darkness he sleeps with himself. To sleep with oneself can be a frightening thing. For we shall all die in the darkness of solitude, in the end."
Wilder will get in. He has 10 successful WBC heavyweight title defenses, including one successful defense over the undefeated lineal champ Tyson Fury. Ten consecutive successful defenses puts him in the top FIVE ALL-TIME among successful, defending heavyweight titlists, tied with Ali for consecutive defenses, who is also at #5. Wilder is ranked in the top 10 all-time for longest single heavyweight title reign. He engaged in 17 fights with ranked heavyweight contenders or reigning/former heavyweight champs, and went 12-4-1. And he engaged in 13 WBC heavyweight title fights. That's a lot of title fights. There have only been four heavyweight fights that have won Ring Fight of the Year in the last 45 years (nearly half century). Bowe-Holyfield 1, Holyfield-Tyson 1. Wlad-Joshua. Fury-Wilder III was the last. Despite all the hand-wringing, Wilder was one of the most successful heavyweight champions in boxing history. Wilder has as many successful heavyweight title defenses by himself as champs like Sharkey, Schmeling, Baer, Braddock, Johansson, Ellis, Norton, Tate, Weaver, Dokes, Coetzee, Thomas, Berbick, Tucker, Witherspoon, Tubbs, Page, Smith, McCall, Douglas, Bowe, and Bruno have COMBINED. He has better credentials than many heavyweights in the Hall of Fame. Moorer included.
So far out of the 20 modern inductees into the HW hall of fame - 18 are certified Lineal HW champions. Vitali also has a murky case. And the lone exception is Ken Norton. I think Wilder has a hard sell to make being that he was Never a lineal champion. He was Never the man of the division at any point in his career. We already know that Fury and Usyk are going in after the Wlad Era. I think only Joshua or Wilder will get in and I’d have to lean Joshua at this point. He faced stronger competition. I don’t see 4 heavyweights going in. To make a comparison Sven Ottke is not in the hall of fame and he retired undefeated, with 20 defenses of the IBF super middleweight title. He beat fighters as least as good as Wilder probably better and he isn’t getting in. He was never the man of the division.
I’m not sure, Sven Ottke is not in and he made 20 defenses of the IBF super middleweight title. He beat Glen Johnson among others, but he isn’t getting in. He was never the man of the division. I don’t think Dariusz Micheleski is in either, and he has a much much stronger case than Wilder. We’ll see. I don’t think Wilder makes it.
