People think he's this great uncrowned ATG based on the fact that "he had Ali beat" (which he didn't, Ali was screwing around and when he decided to get serious it didn't take long) and for one round in one fight (in which he might have gotten KTFO in the second round if not for an inattentive timekeeper).
Frazier never beat a proper puncher, but if his chin holds up or he’s able to the ride them, he grinds down Lyle and stops him (hypothetically because he was never tested against a proper puncher). The only reason we think Frazier would do better against punchers than Norton, is because Norton was knocked out in 1 by several contender level punchers who weren’t ATG’s, but in Norton’s defence, Frazier never fought punchers like the ones Norton fought to see if he can do better. I’d pick Lyle to finish Norton early, but my point is, I wouldn’t be as surprised as many if Lyle did the same to Frazier, because the only reason we rate Frazier higher against punchers is, like I said, because Norton was knocked out in 1 round by a few, but Frazier never fought any for us to see how he’d deal with them, so all I’m saying is there are massive unknowns.
Really we should make both Frazier and Norton favourite over Lyle. Big Ron was a dangerous guy, look at what he did to George, no one did that again. But I'd like to think both Smoke and Kenny have enough to beat Lyle.
Frazier by late rounds stoppage. Either Norton boxes Lyle's ears off or Lyle stops Norton. Good one as always,Fergy.
Frazier stops him in 10, despite taking a fall early on. The hook and pressure exhaust Ron. Lyle has trouble both finding range and landing flush on Norton, who in the later rounds literally hammers him. There would be shaky spots for Ken but he’d win UD.
Lyle should beat Frazier on paper, but I don’t see him doing it. Most i see is a knock down. With Norton, I don't know.
An interesting but not fully fleshed out point. Norton was dropped by Dutra, Gilmore, Eastling early in his career and KOed by Garcia. Frazier was a small swarmer with bad vision in one eye and survived And then twice beat Bonavena who had heavy hands and a prime Quarry. I say Joe was much tougher than Ken, was far more of a warrior, took a better shot and recovered far faster and better .. I can see Ken freezing vs Lyle but never Joe. That said an interesting point.
The version of JF the night he fought GF or after could lose to Ron Lyle… we’ve seen RL vs KN 3x with different faces.
