Would Ingo have been the hardest puncher Liston fought?

Whilst any answers to these questions are highly subjective at best, if not impossible to be certain, I suspect that overall, Cleveland Williams had better punch power than Ingo, possibly Nino Valdes too, even if he was coming to the end by the time Sonny got to him.

 

I suppose Mike DeJohn, then Patterson or vice versa. Maybe Ali comes after or before Floyd. It's true that not many of Liston's opponents were known for their knockout power.

 

I would be stunned if Ingo got much of a chance to show his Toonder to Liston.

 

Surprisingly Liston ranked Dejohn as the second hardest puncher he'd fought after Williams. I was a tad surprised; certain he'd say Valdez.

 

Yes, he punched harder than Williams, look what he did to Machen.

Ingo one punch power was awesome.

 

I believe Machen was floored three times to a stoppage. Similar with Patterson who was floored numerous times. And 9 of his 26 victims took him to the cards. Ingo definitely hit hard but I wouldn’t say he had “ one punch “ power. I’m thinking Williams and Valdez had more power even if they weren’t necessarily as good of fighters overall

Not true, Patterson and Machen rated Ingo the hardest puncher they fought, you forget that Ingo was the first one who stopped Patterson even before Liston, and the only one who destroyed Machen, even tho Machen fought Frazier,Liston, Floyd, Williams etc he claimed that Ingo was the hardest puncher, and Ingo stopping him as the only one who did in Machen career just confirms that Ingo was harder puncher than Cleveland Williams.

When Sonny Liston hit me, I remember going down and getting up Of all the heavyweight champions, I’ve been knocked down the most. But when my fights were stopped, I was always standing up. So I also have the record for getting up. The referee never said ‘Ten’ and I was on the ground.

 

Id say yes, Ingo was a top, top puncher and took out several elite fighters.

 

None of this supports your claim that he had “one punch “ power. Flooring someone three times to a stoppage isn’t knocking anyone out with one punch. Floyd Claiming that ingo hit him harder than Liston who handed him TWO first round knockout defeats is laughable. And Machen going the distance with Williams but not ingo doesn’t say much. Sumbu kalambay was only stopped once in 64 fights against Michael Nunn. Would you say that nunn hit harder than Iran Barkley who Kalambay defeated ?

 

I count only TWO elite fighters. One of whom wasn’t known for his chin and ingo had to clobber him to shlt before finally stopping him.

 

Knocking down and badly hurting the oft knocked down Patterson with a single right hand attested to Ingo’s one shot power to a degree…..

…..but Ingo’s inability to keep the badly wounded Floyd down thereafter contradicted the initial impression of his power.

Machen completely underestimated Ingo, the latter being an unknown quantity when Eddie fought him.

Machen was uncharacteristically aggressive, taking the fight to Ingo, perfect for Ingo and his counter strike right hand.

Ingo was contractually obligated to rematch Machen but broke the clause to fight Patterson instead. Machen would’ve approached Ingo much differently had they rematched.

Liston was not at all an unknown quantity when Machen fought him - especially given that Sonny had recently seen off Folley in < 3 rounds in his fight prior to.

Acutely aware and leery of Liston’s power, Machen basically ran and held against Sonny, fighting only to survive.

With that all said, Ingo is still the thinking man’s GOAT.

 

Wepner and Cleveland Williams probably hit harder. I'm not sure Ingo being better than Cleveland Williams translates to him actually hitting harder.
