I've never seen something be so hyped to be so underwhelming. It was all but a flash kd! Louis up virtually immediately and damn near won Round 3! I just don't see why this gets talked about so much outside of Galento being horrible and getting a very fortunate punch.

Yeah people really exaggerate how much Louis struggled here, got caught like twice by left hooks and still blocked, rolled with and ducked like 95% of Galento’s left hooks anyway. The only problem was that it was basically all Tony threw so there’s only so much you can do.

Because Galento was a 5'8", morbidly obese ice-barrel carrier who didn't train and barely knew how to box.

Just about every heavyweight champ had their embarrassing moments. Dempsey has Willlie Meehan. Marciano had Ted Lowry. Patterson had Rademacher. Liston apologists explain Marty Marshall. Tyson had Douglas. Lewis had Rahmen. Fury will never live down Ngannou.

This was a bit of a low-point for an otherwise great fighter.

I suppose but it just a very weak low point to be honest.

I agree that Louis was never really in trouble. It's just shocking that a guy as crude as Galento even fought for a title or had any success at all. His tape is terrible yet, he shakes Louis 30 seconds into the fight with a hook. Definitely an off night for Joe.

It’s true he looks awful on film, but it’s not like they just picked him off some random barstool to challenge for the heavyweight title.

well, I’m sure they did, but he did destroy Lou Nova.

Call up Galento’s record and look at some of the 1930s contenders he beat. Dude also was stopped or KOd just six times in 110 fights. He may not have looked like a boxer and was horribly unskilled (a capitol offense with everyone worshipping at the shrine of Usyk right now) and he was an uncouth SOB … Ray Arcel who trained him for a while said he brought no credit to the sport … but he was an uncouth SOB who had zero fear, who according to Arcel and Whitey Bimstein, who was in his corner for Louis, was legitimately impervious to pain and had a left hook that could anesthetize a water buffalo. He was not just someone they picked up out of the gutter and put in the ring.

Yeah i recognize that but I've just seen thos kd talked about sooo much when its not even a real crisis moment for Louis, I dont turn up my nose at Galento as a contender (even tho he was crude) but i just dotn get the hype on this kd

He was also the no. 1 contender at the time, and he was very tricky. Just look at the way he feints the hook. You know it's coming but you don't know when, and neither did Louis obviously since he got nailed with it twice. Galento knew how to fight and he used his tools wisely. I love watching this fight. It's competitors like Galento that make the sport so interesting. He had a different body-type and a different psychological make-up than most fighters, and he still enjoyed a remarkable degree of success, which he capitalized upon with public appearances throughout his life. Give the guy some credit. He deserves it, IMHO.

If you want to but he didn't give a lot of respect as he was an unrepentant cheat who blinded someone and complainer who said he allowed to "fight his fight" after being throughly whooped by Louis and every other fight he lost

If my memory is correct, as Galento threw the punch that dropped Louis, he slide his right foot forward so he was throwing the punch from a southpaw stance. He changed the trajectory on the punch because- again if my memory is correct- Louis had his right glove up to block the punch but Galento got it inside his right glove.
I think it is very likely that Louis got caught because he did what many people in this thread are doing; thinking that a guy with a crude style doesn't know how to fight.

Galento was standing orthodox. What happened was Louis got too close to him and let his right hand drop and drift out while he tried to lead with a telegraphed left to the body. Galento stepped and leaned in (lifting and dragging his back right foot) and connected with a short counter. It was effective because Louis never saw the punch.

Uh, Marty Marshall, Douglas and Rahman were actually really good.

I got 5 bikers down at the bar who I would take over Galento.
