Tony Galento was obviously a beast . A nightmare.
The kind of fighter who'd never beat all the contenders (and many would have a field day with him and butcher him like Joe Louis did), but he'd ruin the careers of many a promising 'golden boy' prospect if their managers dared to book a fight with him.

From outside the ring we can sit and laugh at him. You wouldn't be laughing if you in there.

First of all Galento staggered Louis early in the first round and then of course the famous knockdown in the third ... I think the big deal that is made is that the colorful Galento was really an extremely limited fighter and for him to have two serious moments against the fighter who many consider the very best of the best shocks and confuses many people for obvious reasons ..

But boxing isn’t an exact science where the guy with the best skills dominates 100% of the time.

Nobody notes this fight because Louis was in serious trouble. It's noted because someone who looks like the drunk guy I saw last night in a local bar knocked Louis down.

Someone like Galento had no business putting him down in the first place.

If Galento were an opponent for, well, name any top heavyweight of your choice from the last few decades, and that was on HBO, it would be laughed at.

Because Louis still knocked him out in the 4th it matters a lot less. But not completely unimportant.

I have heard, also, that Two Ton Tony rarely bathed. Maybe the stench momentarily befuddled Joe, to the point that he left himself open?
