RIP Champ. I first saw him against Foreman and I couldn´t believe how this short little fighter kept hitting George. Real warrior and amazing he never boxed as an amateur yet learnt some terrific boxing skills. Unlucky Spinks was about. Adios campeon. This content is protected
Dwight Qawi was one of the most impressive fighters Ive watched. Qawi was classical in how he fought and approached a bout. I wish he’d got longer here but he had the high life, fought and beat some tough guys and will basically go down as the archetypical short boxing master - if you wanna learn how to roll with the punches that’s your man, like Tyson, Qawi can teach you how to jab the big guy up. Rest easy Dwight Qawi you lived a compete life.
my grandma didn’t box. Didn’t drink. Didn’t do drugs. Didn’t smoke. Developed dementia anyway around age 88. Made it to 91. Old age happens.
If Qawi came in, in shape and wasn’t plucked out of the roster for being “sloppy” after the Holyfield fight he’d have derailed Foreman’s comeback he was making GF look silly there, people say it’s because “he was only 235lbs” and “weakened” I can’t think of a whackier excuse he was not weight drained he was had spare weight still and was a strong looking 235lbs man obviously he trained very hard for the bout, at the time Foreman was early on the comeback and his weight trended downwards till Qawi and rebounded up afterwards… he saw the advantage of being big he was not “weight drained” lol like I hear he was, plain just getting whipped.
That was a fantastic fight. I recently watched it in High Definition on Top Ranks Channel on YT. Qawi showed incredible courage and ingenuity he outmatched Foreman in many spots despite having every physical disadvantage going.
Qawi always came in shape and ready to FIGHT. At only 5'7", extremely short for a 175-pound light heavyweight, he managed to get inside on and hit a lot of really good fighters, including at 190 and even briefly at heavyweight. He had a cagey, underrated defense, excellent sense of range and distance, and solid power. One of the best to do it. (BTW, I met him in 2013 at a pro show in Iowa and he seemed perfectly fine then. Nice man.)
I loved watching his fights! Something about him always made me smile. RIP, Champ. Condolences to those who loved him, liked him, respected him, and appreciated him! I certainly am included in the last three.
