Jim Maloney outboxed Carnera and won a decision over him. What does this mean? It means he's not too small to handle world class super heavies. And actually, AJ is a bit smaller than Primo Carnera was.
I’d favor Maloney to beat Joshua. Everything about Maloney is bad news for Joshua. Maloney was very experienced, great at ducking under punches, punching with his opponent, and good at maneuvering his opponent. Carnera had a very hard time with Maloney for a reason, but was very lucky, since Tommy Burns, who was in attendance was confident he could train Carnera to beat Maloney in a rematch, which he did. If Carnera didn’t receive help from Burns he most likely would’ve lost again to Maloney and who knows where his career would’ve went.
This is one out of left field, MJL! For me the difference is Carnera couldn't really punch his weight, and AJ ,whatever his other faults could.
Hes not though I'm not sure hes the best example to prove this. Godfrey and Santa both knocked out Maloney. Godfreys the giant that did better against other giants then the best small fighters. Maloney was knocked out 9 times mostly by top guys closer to him in size. I don't think Maloneys your guy to go up against someone like AJ. You're looking for someone with a good chin. Carnera was also only 23 and avenged this loss 2 fights later. This matters because Tommy Loughran who otherwise swept the superheavyweights could not defeat prime Primo Carnera. And Loughran was better than Jim Maloney. Carnera had power but greatly favored his jab. Maloneys win over Weinart is an amazing win. Weinart was 30 and was ranked high but he had been fighting at the top level since he was 18 and retired soon after. He was probably past it and truth be told I'd pick the best Weinart to beat Maloney. Thats all Maloneys really got so much as stoppages are concerned against top opponents of any size. I don't think he could keep AJ off him. If you're barking up this rabbit hole I suggest looking into Johnny Risko. Only stopped once in 15 years and has wins over Max Baer, Campolo, Phil Scott, Godfrey and Galento. Risko won a trilogy with Maloney.
