Given the gulf in class, why did Witherspoon lose this fight?

    1) Was it just Bonecrusher landing a big punch which is always a possibility at any weight class but especially at heavyweight? In other words, Witherspoon did nothing wrong but got caught with a punch that he likely would have avoided 9 nights out of 10?

    2) Was Witherspoon complacent and unmotivated after his win over Bruno and due to his ongoing dispute with King? In other words, Witherspoon underestimated Bonecrusher and paid the price?

    3) Did Witherspoon lose on purpose?

I've seen folk on here think he threw it.
Not sure, maybe but I'm more inclined to think he came in disinterested and under trained.
Smith picked up on it fast and proceeded to hammer him.
    Very unlike Witherspoon tho.

You don't take the punches Witherspoon did in that fight if you're throwing it. Smith could really punch he caught an unmotivated Spoon and closed the show.

Perhaps 2 contributed to the outcome, but either way, primarily 1.

Witherspoon was under motivated , overconfident ( he easily beat Smith badly before ) while Crusher knew his only shot was to ambush Tim early and actually a Hail Mary in the opening seconds that rocked Tim ... Tim seemed to be more stunned than hurt through out but couldn't seem too get his legs back and the three knock downs happened and the fight was stopped ...

Witherspoon got caught cold quick and never recovered. Smith gambled and it paid off.

Smith was a 6’5 235 lbs man renowned for his power who jumped Witherspoon with power shots from the starting bell. Risky tactic but even landing just once was pretty much all he needed to finish Timmy off.

Probably similar to the Lewis/McCall fight.

A superior fighter gets caught by a very capable hard hitting guy who he would normally beat 9 x out of 10.

I dont really get behind any conspiracies as upsets happen all the time.

One glimpse at Withersoon’s waistline that night tells a story too. He clearly hadn’t taken the fight all that seriously. Also factor in that he’d beaten Smith convincingly a couple years before. Easy for Tim to add two and two and come up with five.

I don't think Witherspoon threw the fight per se.

But Witherspoon was going through the motions at that point in his career with the issues with Don King and the fact he wasn't putting 100 percent effort into training.

Witherspoon was not in good shape vs Bruno prior to the Bonecrusher fight and won that fight by just outlasting Bruno it wasn't one of his best performances.

Against Bonecrusher he was even more out of shape and I think maybe because he'd beaten Bonecrusher so easily the 1st time he didn't recognise the danger.

For me Bonecrusher just took advantage of the situation and swarmed all over an out of shape lackluster Witherspoon early and took his shot and it paid off.

We also need to remember Witherspoon was originally scheduled to face Tony Tubbs in the rematch. He didn't know he's fighting Smith until a week before the fight. And he didn't like it one bit, threatened he would pull out. He confirmed he will get into the ring only in a day of the fight.

I don’t think he threw the fight, he was in line for a Tyson payday. If you look at the replay, the knockdowns look legit and he kept getting up.
