Having won 38 of his first 40 fights by ko he almost had Gomez like numbers but when looking at context? Also Hamed, Barrera and Morales hit super hard too...

    Opinions?

If talking strictly power, why not the best?

Because Wilfredo Gomez won all his fights there by knockout..like 25 or so fights..I know Gomez also won some fights at Bantamweight through..But yeah I think Garza is close either way.

Quite a few scribes opined Garza was the heavier hitter at one point. I'd be inclined to agree. I think Wilfredo's power was mildly understated over the years in here, strangely enough. Garza isn't near as good a fighter, but i think he packed even more power than Gomez. He had real one punch KO power.

I agree, Gil Clancy once said he was the hardest puncher in boxing at that time, he could really get you outta there with one shot. I really hated it when he crashed and burned, boy he sure was entertaining to watch

You know, the guy who busted Garza's bubble also had a lot of power....

In terms of pure power, Victor Callejas is high up there at 122.

Garza hit harder than Gomez I think. Gomez just threw so many that he overwhelmed opponents, much like Duran at lightweight. His one-shot power wasn’t on par with Garza though, nor Hamed’s.

Its between Victor Callejas and Jaime Garza. Pedro Decima isn't too far behind in terms of pure power.

Gomez and Duran are great friends. In fact, they, Eusebio Pedroza and Alexis Arguello were their own clique.

Gomez learned his style from training with Duran in Panama. As far as Pedroza, they once promised that they would not fight each ither at the behest of Panamanian President Omar Torrijos who said they were his favorite boxers, and they were like brothers from what I gather about the meetings they had through the years.

As far as Arguello, I saw him, Gomez and Duran together at fights and sometimes a combination of the group would be watching another one of the clique's member's fights at ringside. Like for Leonard-Duran I, you can see Arguello and Gomez at ringside. After Arguello died, Duran said he knew Alexis and Alexis was not suicidal.

But the fact they were all friends explains Gomez's tendency to fight like Duran and also, having seen what turning his back on an opponent did to Duran recently, why Gomez was willing to die in the ring against Sanchez, Pintor, Nelson, Lockridge, and to a lesser extent, Laporte.

Gosh..I hated that Max Kellerman mentioned Pernell Whitaker 3 out of every 4 conversations, and now Im turning into being to Wilfredo Gomez what Max Kellerman was to Whitaker, LMAO

I would agree, and I say that as even a huge Gomez fan.

Garza and Hamed were more devastating than Gomez with single shots.

Gomez COULD end a fight with one punch, make no mistake about it, but Gomez's true devastation typically came by way of being one of the best combination punchers who ever lived.

I am no expert at 122 pounds boxers, but, at 122 pounds, and one punch power, I would guess Jamie Garza was #1. For overall punching power, I would go with Wilfredo Gomez at #1.
