BBC having a photo of a female boxer is probably a guide to what to expect. If Jake Paul and BBC can have all of the women, so i dont have to see or here about it. Then I think it is a mega deal
And the line ‘Boxxer currently houses some of the biggest talents in UK boxing including Olympic and world champion Lauren Price.’ She’s the only boxer mentioned in the present tense in the piece, and surely nobody is expecting Azim, Whittaker, Simpson and co. to be fighting on iPlayer
Don’t know if it’s to do will his excellency but there seems to be very little women’s boxing on DAZN. I know Shields was on recently but that was the last fight of the Salita deal. If all the women’s stuff goes to Netflix or the BBC I’ll be happy to as it means the two sports have finally been divided. Boxxer’s deal is only for 1 year and we all know that the BBC won’t renew like Sky didn’t. This is a stay of execution for Shalom.
Already mentioned a couple of times but I hope Boxxer and the Bullsh** Broadcasting Corporation become the new home of British women’s boxing so I no longer have to watch any of it.
Poor old Shalom, how the mighty have fallen. I hope the financial details are released because one things for sure, it’ll be a fraction of what Sky were giving him.
Finding the cynicism here pretty disappointing. They're promising primetime, free-to-air boxing on both linear TV and the iPlayer. So many people bleat about how boxing is hidden on "the app", or behind paywalls. This announcement is surely only positive on that front. No doubt there will be a big promotional slant towards non-English names to keep the BBC regions happy. Hence the Lauren Price photo on the BBC Sport website. Shalom said on Talksport earlier that they still intend to run PPV events elsewhere - honestly find that difficult to see, more likely they hope to keep representing big names and getting fees when they box on Saudi-backed cards. But even if their free-to-air roster is mostly made up of domestic level fighters, so the hell what? Channel 5, especially under Hennessy, showed that good matchmaking can be more important than the big names.
An easy win for BBC or anyone for that matter is to bring back Prizefighter. Guaranteed entertainment and especially for an audience like that of the BBC they would enjoy those 3 rounders and start off with the Heavyweigthts drum up interest. They don't need to be 'top' ranked fighters just names former or upcoming, even Internationally. I cannot understand why it has not been brought back already! Even the likes of Jake Paul and all that circus would love that format surely
The glory days (if there were any) for Boxxer are well and truly done. The big names will move on, as they won't be able to afford to pay them. The only positive is it could potentially give good exposure to young, upcoming prospects, exposing them to a wide audience. I wonder how long the deal will go on for. It reminds me of when Eubank Jr came back to ITV boxing. I think he had a couple of fights, including one with DeGale, and then it disappeared.
I know a lot of people don't like Shalom, but starting a boxing promotion at such a young age and being able to get a foothold in an industry run by Frank who has 50 years experience and Eddie who inherited the Matchroom empire off his dad is no easy thing to do. Time will tell on what kind of events we will get, but it will be nice to get some boxing not behind a pay wall for once. I say fair play to him, I hope it works out.
If Boxxer can reposition themselves as the feeder outfit for the likes of Matchroom and Queensbury, they will be ok. Any thoughts of a big 3 are over though. They are Europa League now. I wonder if he had his time back would he have kept his powder dry and not pursued the likes of Buatsi and Okolie, who between the couldn't feel a minibus with their fans. Azim to Queensbury, Whittaker to Matchroom has to be the play now I should imagine
