Did a weird review of some heavyweight fights in snippets yesterday

Larry Holmes vs Michael Spinks I

Found a great YT upload that had all of the pre-fight build up and watched most of it. Great boxing history in there about the light heavyweights going up and facing the heavyweights. There was a great segment on Spinks training with Shilstone and Holmes's businesses

I only watched round 1, 10, 14 and 15 and gave them all to Spinks. Spinks was too tricky for Larry who could not seem to get his right hand going. The jab was off too. Spinks hit the body, hit the head and jabbed very well. I know everyone wants to talk about the press conference but Larry was incredibly respectful and humble in his post fight interview with Larry Merchant. He made no excuses, did not say he was robbed, gave Michael credit and when given the path to blame it on age Holmes said no it was a styles thing. I remember in the build up they mentioned Futch sitting it out and Larry talked about Futch knowing Michael in and out and that part of the camp would be dedicated to understanding Spinks's strategy and tendencies. It was a very interesting foreshadowing to what wound up occurring in the Ring

Michael Spinks vs Larry Holmes II

I only watched round 14 and 15 and gave both to Holmes. He was right about the styles thing and it not being age. He got his right hand to Spinks and hurt him a few times. He looked so much better down the stretch on a still tricky and well conditioned Spinks who Larry was able to figure out. It was a great vindicating performance for Holmes to improve upon the first fight

It got me wondering if had Holmes say went 2-0 over Spinks would Spinks ever have been the man at heavyweight if say Holmes retired at 50-0

Andy Ruiz vs Anthony Joshua II

    9: Ruiz 10-9
    10 Ruiz 10-9
    11 Joshua 10-9
    12 Joshua 10-9

I never fully re-watched this fight and still have not after this. I loved the first fight and was hoping this would be another action packed tussle. I remember Andy doing the media circuit and posing for pictures where it looked like he got trimmer. Fast forward to the weigh in and he was wearing a shirt and came in well above the first fight weight. Was he trolling us? What happened to the trimmer looking Ruiz? Big Thanksgiving feast? Was he wearing a mans corset? Trick photography?

All kidding aside I never gave Joshua a whole lot of credit for this performance saying that Ruiz was a fat **** in there and Joshua played keep away from the fat guy. It was a very unsatisfying revenge after Ruiz had humbled and embarrassed him at the Garden and Joshua could hardly put a dent in Ruiz. Watching it back Joshua was at the perfect weight and boxed a terrific fight. He jabbed well, moved well and was in great condition. Much like Wilder being light in the first Fury fight I think Joshua was suited to be this size and that bulking was a mistake for both. Ruiz as I remembered had a late surge where he got some punches in and won a few rounds, too little too late. He did hit Joshua with a sneaky overhand right similar to one of the knockdowns from the first fight and he ate it. Ruiz in spots was dangerous but Joshua had too much for him. If Ruiz came in lighter and was able to cut the ring this may have been a good fight

Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua II

I found the DAZN highlights and focused mainly on round 9 and 10. These were the two dramatic rounds of the fight. I actually give Joshua a lot of credit for improving upon his performance in the first fight. He clearly won the 9th and landed his best work before Usyk got him back in the 10th and shut the door on a rally. That said, Joshua landed a huge right hand counter in the 10th and Usyk proved his heavyweight mettle eating it and coming back strong. I had totally forgotten about that hard punch in return.

My first post on the forum after watching from a distance for a while, particularly like the classic section and this thread.
Need to be able to keep track of fights I’ve watched as YouTube sometimes gets rid of my history.

Just done Tyson vs Richardson & Nelson which I immediately recognised I’d done before, particularly the quick knockdown in the Richardson fight. Done up to those for early Tyson with a few of his longer fights and early title defences.

Hopefully something slight more substantial tonight.

Jermaine Taylor v Kelly Pavlik (middleweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Pavlik
Round 2: 10-7 Taylor (scores a knockdown and then distributes a battering)
    Round 3: 10-9 Pavlik
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Taylor
    Round 6: 10-9 Pavlik
Round 7: Pavlik drops and stops Taylor

Total through 6 completed rounds: 57-56 Taylor (actual scores: 58-55, 59-54 and 58-55 all for Taylor)

I saw this back in the day and it was well worth seeing again. Great fight. I didn't have it as comfortable for Taylor as the officials. I had it close. And that is with the 10-7 round I gave him in the 2nd (it wasn't just a knockdown but a full battering after the knockdown. The 10 point system allows latitude but many judges just stick with a conformed mindset). Again, great fight.

Yea every once in a while on the RBRs I'll tack on a 10-8 round when one guy absolutely batteres the other guy and the other guy gets in almost no offense.

    Roach vs Davis

1 10-9 swing round very close
    2 9-10 another close round
    3 10-9
    4 10-9
    5 9-10
    6 9-10
7 10-9 Davis landed some bombs though
    8 10-9 Davis briefly rocked
    9 9-10 Should be 10-8 great round
    10 10-9 clear
    11 10-9 clear
    12 10-9 clear
    F 116-112 Roach

I am glad I finally watched the fight. The first few rounds were pretty tedious as nothing really happened. But then the fight heated up in round 5, and some of the exchanges in the second half were amazing. I had roach win pretty clearly I could see where Larry hazard is coming from with his card. Given the first 4 rounds were very close swing rounds, I felt round 5 on was pretty easy to score. The only Rounds, I could consider flipping around in the second half are 7 to Davis and round 9 to roach. But he was certainly robbed of a knockdown.

Although I disagree with it, I can see a path to the draw. There is no way that Davis won this fight.

    Following that:

Ruddock vs Broad - Horrible and strange stoppage, ref had no conviction. It was heading to a more natural conclusion.

Ruddock vs Smith - Like these kind of match ups, the young bull vs the guy who has been around the block with still a bit left to give. The knockdown was a surprise, and Frazier in the corner, I didn’t realise he had a stint doing that. Ruddock too fresh in the end.

Slowly working my way to Tyson/Ruddock which is the fights I am anticipating most for both of them.

A few more short fights to end my night.

    Mercer vs Richardson
Bowe vs Mike Robinson - An early fight worth watching, Robinson was game and come to win. Bowe looked lean and languid which probably encouraged Robinson. Then Bowe decided to finish it.
This lead me to Morrison vs Robinson, mean intentions as ever very early. Nasty body work.
Finished on Morrison vs Jaco. Big left hook upstairs crumples Jaco.

Nigel Benn v Sugar Boy Malinga I (British scoring)

    Round 1: Benn
    Round 2: Benn
    Round 3: Even
    Round 4: Malinga
    Round 5: Malinga
    Round 6: Benn
    Round 7: Benn
    Round 8: Malinga
    Round 9: Malinga
    Round 10: Malinga

Total: 98 - 97 1/2 Malinga (The referee was the sole arbiter and he had it 98 - 97 1/2 for Benn)

Not a slam-bang affair but these two fought at a very good pace and I must say that every round was over before I knew it. There were shifts in style and momentum throughout but I felt Malinga did enough to nick it. Incidentally, I did a quick history search on this and found only @salsanchezfan had checked this out before (Well, another poster did as well but it looks like he is sitting out a permanent ban). Sal, although you and I only agreed on 5 rounds, we both saw Malinga the winner by a round.

Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward I

    Round 1: 10:9 Gatti
    Round 2: 10:9 Gatti
    Round 3: 10:9 Gatti
Round 4: 9:9 Even (point taken away from Gatti for the low blow)
    Round 5: 10:9 Ward
    Round 6: 10:9 Gatti
    Round 7: 10:9 Gatti
Round 8: 10:8 Ward (Gatti down)
    Round 9: 10:9 Ward
    Round 10: 10:9 Gatti

    Final: 95-93 Arturo Gatti

Great scrap that could have gone either way. The biggest difference maker is round 4, as if you have Ward winning it, as did Harold Lederman, the fight would end up in a draw.

I think I had Gatti winning that fight too, but I must admit it's been a long while since I've seen that fight. I might have to rescore that one as well
