Don't get me wrong. ¿What boxer is considered a ATG by you, but didn't have anything particularly "incredible" as a boxer? A boxer who was perhaps good at everything but not excellent, and that was enough to become a great?
Carlos Monzon Barney Ross Carlos Ortiz These three are all-time greats of the absolute highest order, and they're all a little unimpressive. At least from a spectacle standpoint - sure they all a very good physical gift - Monzon's dimensions, Ortiz's strength and Ross' chin - but you don't get wowed by them as you'd expect from a top 40 P4Per (or 15 in Ross' case), or at least I don't. I think it's because they basically work everything off of control. All of them are close enough to pure ring generals in the truest sense.
Barney Ross is a good shout… Emile Griffith? We don’t consider him great but he could box great… BUDDY MCGIRT
Joey Archer anybody? Basilio and Fullmer? Bobo Olson…they’re all obviously gifted as all the best guys are but visually the almighty “eye test” eh - Fullmer is visually abhorrent and offensive.
