Yes, it's been done before. It will be done again.

Often, however, there is focus on which is the GOAT at 160lbs, or higher ranking ATG...or how either would fare against each other's competition. When the head to head match-up itself gets discussed, each man will have their smattering of confident backers (with a pithy sentence or two in justification, citing this or that perceived advantage, stylistic foible, or intangible) and there is often a murmured consensus of "it's a close one, alright..." before the whole topic quietly subsides.

Rarely have I seen a technical deep-dive, from the sundry keen analytical minds on here (ranging from published historians to incredibly dedicated hobbyist super-fans), on just how and why either champion is to be favored over the other. I want a detailed walkthrough of the way it plays out bell to bell - with all the dynamic interplay of their strengths & weaknesses.

So, ultimately, as in most poll threads - you simply vote. Prime for prime, whatever you consider the best of each versus the best of the other. Just know that a) you will be called upon to explain your choice in depth if you haven't already done so in-thread, and b) your vote will be irrevocable and you are marrying yourself to either Monzón or Hagler as your h2h winner. So, think it over if you must. Debate with your fellow Classic Forum denizens. Vote if and when you have made and feel at peace with your final decision.

Newbies are welcome to join in the conversation, and vote in the poll, but for posterity's sake I will be putting together and updating a tally counting only members with a) tenure of 1 year or more on here and b) minimum 1,000 posts (if you are short of either requirement; your pick can be officially counted once you meet it). To start things off I'll tag as many of what strike me as still currently active "regulars" below - apologies for any misses. (regulars defined as having at least poked their heads in to lurk if not post in the last few months)

TL;DR - if you want your vote counted in the

I agree that these were two of the greatest middle weights of all time. Neither is #1 but both are arguably top 5. About 35 years ago ring magazine had this matchup in their battle of the legends segment. Can’t remember who was on the panel but if my memory serves, opinions were pretty divided on who would have won ( as they should be. ). Both of these men were true ATG’s who engaged in many fights and neither were ever stopped. Both were proven 15 round fighters. Both could punch but I think Hagler had the edge in that department. Monzon had a slight advantage in height and reach. Marvin was a southpaw while Monzon was orthodox. Not sure if this would be a problem for Carlos or not as I don’t even know how many southpaws he faced or how good they were. Both guys had some of their bigger wins coming from men rising in weight to meet them but both also beat plenty of good natural middles. Who had the better chin ????? No idea. Stamina was probably about equal.

I can only see this one going to the cards In what I believe would be a very close fight. Who wins ? I haven’t a clue.

I'll probably go into this in more depth when I have the time, but I just can't see Marvin winning this fight. Monzon's greatest attribute was his ability to control the pace and flow of a fight. He sets the rhythm he wants with that ramrod jab, stays at a range where he can keep drumming his straight punches onto while far enough away to simply step or lean back to avoid return fire. He really was quite brilliant at using his gangly awkwardness to control the action and imposing his will onto opponents. Monzon was indefatigable and was unwavering in his self-belief in his ability and dedication to a game-plan. Hagler, for as sublime as he was in his boxing ability, and despite being clearly more athletically gifted, he just got in his way too often to be favoured over someone as cerebral as Monzon. Hagler was an over-thinker and got into his own head fairly often, which led to him underperforming in quite a few big fights. The Petronellis just weren't all that good as cornermen or strategists either imo, which compounded Hagler's issues with fighting the wrong fight. I think Hagler would get out to a good start but would be forced into fighting Monzon's fight and at Monzon's pace as the Argentine adjusts to the work of the man from Brick City. Neither man gets stopped here.

Glad to have one of this section's super heavyweights be the first to weigh in! (even if just ultimately to straddle the fence :sisi1)

I'm hardly unbiased here, with Hagler being on my pugilistic Mt. Rushmore - but even for me, Monzón's abilities were formidable and daunting enough to give me pause.

Re: Monzón facing lefties, don't quote me on this but IIRC he never did actually face one, at least professionally. Then again, Hagler never faced anybody remotely like him.

It was a pretty sobering chore to sift through hundreds of pages of content to determine who is & isn't "active", coming to realize just how many of the great intellects and tribal elders are no longer with us (in the sense of being either on prolonged sabbatical or banned from the board, or having shuffled off this mortal coil). :ohno

I can think of at least a dozen names off the cuff whose takes on this it would've been delightful to have included.

Yeah I’m kinda hung up on whether or not Hagler’s south paw stance would be the deciding factor. But as you say Monzon was an exceptional boxer. I really don’t know who to favor. I didn’t vote on the poll

I pretty much agree with what @Dorrian_Grey said about the matchup. Even though Hagler was a better athlete and, honestly much more enjoyable, to watch he had a tendency to not fight the way he should and make fights much more difficult for himself as shown over and over again. Monzon was the opposite, he had an effective but very ugly style but he knew what he needed to do to win and was great at doing it beating some great fighters. So I think Hagler has some success early eventually Monzon starts timing him figures him out maybe wears him out with his clinch work and takes over the fight late winning a clear decision. Though I doubt either man would stop the other both had amazing chins.

(don't bother with Google's stupid wonky AI tools for stuff like this ...it claims Monzón faced "several left-handers", including none other than Nino Benvenuti...:rolleye:)

What is certain is that from about 1970 onward, after becoming a contender and then champion with global eyes on him, Monzón never fought any. If he did see one in the pros it would have been in the sixties, with many of these obscures foes having their handedness unlisted on BoxRec or elsewhere. Needless to say, none of these would have been anywhere near the level of a MMH.

note: this isn't a knock on Monzón, either... many HOF and even ATG champions in the sport managed to go their entire career staring down few opposite handed opponents to none. Lennox Claudius Lewis, for instance, met just two in sanctioned contests - once in the pros and one in the amateurs. (in his case, it's long been rumored that he got spooked by a southpaw in sparring and vowed to not give any high-level ones a chance where it would count)

I am honored to have been included in the roll call. Not quite ready to make my pick, even though I've thought who would win this fight for the last 20 years, give or take.

I voted Hagler but to be honest I am not the best scholar when it comes to the career of Carlos Monzon. I have not watched many of his fights or of the other guys in his time as champion. I have watched basically every significant Hagler fight.

I really like the fact that Hagler has 15 round conditioning, a hard punch, can fight out of both stances and takes a great punch. I think Hagler's weakness can come down to not fighting the right fight or getting pulled into fighting the other guy's fight. He did this versus Leonard and he did this versus Duran.

Monzon for me has always been a great sum of his parts fighter even if maybe nothing completely flashes but he has always been a machine who grinds guys down and wins fights. If he can control the pace of the fight he can win.

How instructive, if at all, do we find Bad Bennie Briscoe? He's, to my knowledge, their only common opponent. Of course that means he's bridging two different eras, even though only 5 years and change had elapsed between his losses to either one. Circumstances were also quite different; one scheduled for fifteen rounds and the other one for ten. Briscoe challenged Monzón while still winning more than he lost, and when the Argentine was the reigning champion; he was winding down as a 16 year veteran, on the other hand, when he valiantly tried but failed to defend his Philly home turf from the determined and just-priming 26 year old Brocktonian in what the Associated Press hilariously dubbed "Battle of the Balds".

Monson has never impressed me,i get that he is an atg,but for me something was missing. On the other hand Hagler exuded class and would have to much for Carlos. He would win a decision on points

...also, it bears repeating having a close look at Briscoe, going the distance with these middleweight monoliths - Monzón twice - at different stages of his career (and squaring off with the likes of Griffith, Kitten Hayward, Mundine, Rondón, Antuofermo, "Feo" Rodríguez, and George Benton) and never otherwise being so much as knocked down in 96 outings, what a gargantuan feat it was for Rodrigo Valdéz to stop him. :deal:

I would not predict a knockout in this fight. They were both extremely hard to stop. I think this is one of those weird cases where Carlos Monzon would dictate the pace, but Marvin Hagler might still land more, especially power punches. In addition to that, Marvin's left handed stance could trouble Carlos, but Carlos did have that good right hand.

Assuming we have good judges here, I am going with Marvin Hagler, in a very close fight on the scorecards, after a fight where casual observers might think Carlos won. This screams controversial decision. A trilogy or more may be needed to settle this, if it can ever be really settled.
