Spinks was a MUCH bigger underdog. Both put on brilliant displays. It's going to depend on who emphasizes what.

Spinks. He was the first lineal light heavyweight champion to become the lineal heavyweight champion. Did that with no fights at HW either. Holmes also rates higher historically.

And Holmes still had a fair bit left over,as he proved against Mercer, Holyfield etc.
I can't see Fury being that competitive in five years!

Yup, I think Spinks. Lots of people made Usyk favourite against Fury, not many picked Mike.

Had Usyk beat Fury straight up moving up from Cruiser then maybe I´d pick him but he didn´t while Spinks had not looked that great in previous 3 outing (struggled badly with Eddie Davis, rocked by Jerry Celestine and looked disinterested for 2 rounds before blowing out David Sears in the 3rd).

Holmes had smashed Michael´s former Heavyweight champ brother easily in 3.

Holmes himself struggled with a young Carl Williams and had early problems with undefeated David Bey and always dangerous Bonecrusher Smith but always found a way to win.

Michael Spinks just clinches it for me.

If Fury comes back and stops AJ (or Jake Paul!!!!) and beats Usyk in a trilogy then that 1st win will look even better. Unlikely though.

Usyk faced a much greater disparity in size.

If we are talking upsets, Spinks for sure. Being from St Louis, I was a huge Spinks fan as a kid and most thought he was going to lose that fight and was looking to cash out and retire. Historically speaking, it was a big win because he came up from lightheavy.

I have picked Uysk to win every fight he has been in as a pro and have been a fan since his amateur days. I had him beating Fury both times and don't consider any of his wins upsets. For what it's worth, I would pick him over both Spinks and Holmes.

Spinks. He wasn’t as proven as Usyk was at HW and Holmes was a lot more consistent at the time than Fury was, having wins over David Bey (beat Page, got stopped) and James Smith (beat Bruno, got stopped on cuts).

I'm simpy pointing out that size disparity should be an additional factor in such comparisons.

I dont think it has as much of a positive 'swing' as you might think. Spinks beating a consumate professional who with the benefit of hindsight is in maybe most people's top 3,5 or 10 heavyweights and was a bigger man is better than Usyk beating Fury and AJ who, and Im speaking as a Fury and AJ fan, contrarian that I am, don't make much of an impact on many people's ATG lists, regardless of the much bigger size disparity.

Sadly, although I think Usyk will be remembered kindly by history, there will awlays be an asterisk at his heavyweight credentials because of the relative paucity of his competition. You can only beat what's in front of you, and I think he is a head to head nightmare, but that's only my opinion based on conjecture because that is all we got....

Absolutely love Usyk, but the answer is very clearly Spinks.

That Holmes would beat every version of AJ, Fury and Dubois.
