What boxers were scientist when it came to energy conservation?

They used the least amount of movement and kept their energy output low so they could stay fresh while the other guy tired himself out.

Late George Foreman seemed to be really good at this.

Old George was an inverse of his stressed out self in the ring, good defence, lots of subtle rolls genuinely a very good to great defence at HW… he’s actually a HW id say watch and learn, Ray Robinson was cool headed, Napoles, B Leonard too and LaMotta… honestly I think the vast, vast majority of old timers in the 15 rd+ era were good at conserving energy - Jack Johnson… heck throw in John L’s name in the hat with the multi hour long fights he had lol, I don’t think it’s the training of then that facilitated that but that fight frequency and the stress acclimation they’d undergo as young fighters and throughout there career, I’d say stand outs are noticeable today because these things are missing.

    Salvador Sanchez.

Roman Gonzalez was another who just made everything seem so smooth and effortless, even when he was firing on all cylinders.

Here is a quote from Loughran regarding his fights with Greb.

He'd never stop throwing punches. But he wouldn't do that with me. See, everybody he fought backed up, and I didn't. I moved in on him. I got him before he had a chance to get set and I don't think he ever figured that out..... Then I would get back and catch his punches, because they were all hooks, and the only thing I had to watch was his head, but he didn't butt. Ofcourse, I could've stopped that with an uppercut, but if you do that you expose yourself to a hook, and he was a hooker and consequently I didn't take any chances. He had an extraordinary ability along the lines of endurance. He never seemed to run out of wind. The last 5 rounds I murdered him. And I learned from that, that's why I learned to like 15 round bouts. We were trained, our conditioning was such that we didn't get tired. Today I think the whole thing is lost.

*King* Carlos Monzon I was watching the 2nd Valdez fight the yesterday and when he got decked he didn’t seem in any panic, just sort of kept doing what he had to, to keep the overhand right off him, he had a stressed looked to how he fought to me, he’d jab and instantly lean out of reach or pull back on shots in a jerky way, create a wall of arms etc but with how little he got caught this wasn’t an “anxious” sort of thing or reactive it’s just smart fighting - I believe Monzon was not taught what he knew mostly, I think his early pro experience built him that he had an imagination and a top tier ability to observe… similar to the Ingles and D’mato they had a great talent with Hamed / Tyson to make the style work - he looks “experienced” more then he does educated or fundamental if that makes sense, I believe you’ll get what I mean.

Khaosai Galaxy had a patient killer in him, lot like Louis he just worked the plan till they succumbed he didn’t panic or need a “hurrah” moment.

And that was Carlos on his last tread, his final of 99 pro fights, a bullet having ripped through his shoulder, two packs a day taking their toll, 35 years of age.

Gil Clancy made an insightful comment during the Duran Barkley fight, concerning how Duran could fight a much larger younger opponent without tiring ,he said" The reason Duran is able to do what he does is he's so relaxed, so comfortable in the ring"

Both Galaxy and Gonzalez also had massively underrated defensive instincts which definitely suits this thread. Here's some old footage of Roman sparring. When he focuses on defense he's actually seriously slick imo.

Archie Moore would seem a good candidate.

The man could stand right in front of you and you would still miss him.

I guess Mayweather Jr and Jimmy Young deserve a mention.

John Ruiz gave energy conservation a new meaning when he fought Roy Jones Jr.

Don’t do something John, just stand there.
