How would you compare the techniques of both, who have at times been derided as sloppy by critics? I'm not asking who would win in a fight, but rather who demonstrated better technique and fundamentals.

Wilder is better at sucking in everything. That's about it.

All Wilder can do is step back and unload a right hand ( he needs a ridiculous amount of room for it) and hope the other guy falls. There was no Plan B. The fact that a goof like that “reigned” as long as he did is Exhibit A against any argument that boxing is evolving into something better. Stop the nonsense.

The two aren’t comparable. In style or substance.

I say this as someone who isn't very high on Marciano at all but this is disrespectful to Marciano lol, they're not comparable.

One fighter is unorthodox and effective. The other fighter (Wilder) just plain sucks. Were he not born with great power, he wouldnt crack the top 50 in his era.

I think saying Wilder plain sucks is too far. In all honesty, would Wilder have struggled that much with the majority of Marciano's opponents?

Conversely, how well would we see Rocky doing if he had to face Tyson Fury 3 times?

Only one of them has a technical standpoint. So that makes it difficult to compare.

Marciano is an all time great and had subtle and effective skills in many areas...whereas Wilder had nothing other than a right hand. KO1 Marciano 500 times out of 500

Wilder was far more dangerous, had a far more effective trump card and he leaned on it hard which you can not blame him for.

And no he didn't just lean back and throw the right hand. The Szpilka was a nice underneath counter against an advancing opponent... and deadly.

All I know is that Don Cockell wouldn't have seen the 2nd minute against WIlder let alone the 9th round.

Wilder is one of the most gifted athletes in the history of the heavyweight division. He is long, powerful, explosive, and carried his power the entire fight. He started boxing as an adult in a state that is not known for boxing programs, gyms, or trainers. His fights were exciting and IMO one of his most underrated talents is that he could create and close distance faster than any boxer I've seen.

DW was not taught the fundamentals as a beginner in the way he would have been taught in a good gym, with a good trainer, but his natural talent got him a long way. DW's technical fighting worked for him, it probably wouldn't work for anybody else. He could have been much better if a good fundamental trainer had trained him from the start, but his physical talent was so good that he was probably the most dangerous heavyweight to ever fight. DW was a natural talent but not a fighter to emulate.

Rocky Marciano moved like the Tin Man IMO. His footwork/balance looks terrible. I've never heard a trainer or fighter say "I want to learn to do ________ like Marciano." There are people who say that RM was better than he looked on video. I'll have to take their word for it. I can't watch him fight. I watched his fight with JJW for a Fight of the Week and was amazed at how clumsy and inept RM looked in the ring.

Only fools believe Marciano was amateurish. He was insulted w that early in his career but his opponents all learned the truth. He was far trickier than advertised. Hard to hit, excellent at countering the jab, feints etc. had power in both hands and the best stamina u could have. Wilder was easy to hit with only one tool. He beat no one of note in his career. He’s overrated…prob the biggest waste of talent ever in boxing history because he could have been a modern Louis if he took his craft seriously

Wilder has no technical ability whatsoever.
