The incumbent is an undefeated Cuban who fights out of Germany standing 6′2½″ with all but one of his victories coming by way of KO (good for a rate of 92.31%). His six-foot-one challenger - from Russia by way of Florida - is coming off his only professional defeat, challenging for a different SMW belt last October and losing a unanimous decision against then IBF champ William Scull.

Each had a lengthy amateur career - in fact, they ran in parallel for about nine years in the same weight range competing internationally - but never crossed paths.
