Douglas wasn't a diamond in rough, Tyson always had problems with that style.

I've seen a lot of Tyson fanatics try to make Douglas more than what he was and that Tokyo Douglas was some sort of mythical figure. In my opinion fought how he normally fought and Tyson always had trouble with tall, rangey out boxers and Douglas was always gonna give he a tough fight. The outside the ring stuff was irrelevant in my opinion, Tyson always had trouble with that style the guy who exploited that trouble just happened to be a fringe contender, it happens, just like a guy who in my opinion was just below world level, in McCall exploited the flaw in Lewis guard, sometimes a lesser skilled boxer just has a better boxers number or they have the style or gameplan to beat them, thats just apart of boxing.

    Yes, but...

Douglas's mother died prior to the fight and he dedicated the fight to her. Don't forget Douglas was KD'd earlier in the fight. Had he not dedicated the fight to his mother it is possible he would not have summoned the courage and willpower to get up and stop Tyson.

The fight that we all missed out on was Tyson vs. Tua. I think had they fought, Tua would have stopped Tyson, and rewritten the history books.

I think its for both of the main reasons generally said.

One that Buster Douglas was always a stylistic nightmare for Mike Tyson.

Two that Mike Tyson was not the same fighter as he fought Holmes and Spinks.

Would have loved to have seen a rematch. That was a great performance from Douglas, the best of his career.

"Tyson fanatics" are quick to stress that Tyson was so great to overcome so many physical disadvantages in so many fights, but a lot of them tend to deny that Douglas successfullly exploited Tyson's disadvantages and utilized his own advantages (and come up with other reasons). People need to step back and see these are all just separate fights. Douglas did what others tried to do, and succeeded mainly because he did it better on the night. Tyson was never under an illusion that he was at a physical advantage, with his lack of height and reach. He was successful in spite of that, until a day he wasn't successful. It's nothing more than that. You win some, you lose some.

    It was all three factors.

    Bad style.

    Tyson declining post-Rooney.

...and, yes, Buster went super-Saiyan to do it for his late mum.

Fair opinion but a I do weight the first part heavily. Like I recall at least 3 fights were Tyson struggled with similar guys, like mitch green didn't get koed by Mike

Tyson was clearly declining, getting dropped by McCall in the camp and all. Douglas was preparing himself for a career-defining performance on the other hand. But yeah, it was the style that Eddie Futch predicted would trouble Tyson. Stay off the ropes, tie him up, throw your own shots.

Tyson clearly didn’t train or have any focus whatsoever

Still nearly took out Buster with 1 shot

If Tyson lost his mother his fanboys would take it as another excuse to why he lost.

They are also forgetting that Buster caught the flu during the fight week and was injected with penicillin to combat bronchitis and swollen tonsils the day before the fight. So Douglas was basically fighting sick and on antibiotics but it was Tyson who wasn't 100%, lol. Also, his baby mama was in the hospital with a potentially fatal kidney ailment during that time.

    Winners don't need excuses tho.
