How would a fight between Joe Louis Vs James Smith Or Mike Weaver have played out? Would those two have been Ideal for Louis with his superior skills and deadly hitting power? Or could they have been dangerous,red flag fights?
They'd be interesting for sure. Both had power, could put guys down early. Neither man was a bum, but I agree they shouldn't win.
I think they would give a good account of themselves but both get stopped. Mike Weaver might be particularly vulnerable as he was sometimes a slow starter. If Louis was in there instead of Dokes in that first fight, he wouldn’t have needed an early controversial intervention by the ref.
Yep: If we’re asking who would have done better vs the Bomber, I’d have to go with Bonecrusher because he was big, strong and sturdy. Weaver was the better fighter overall, I think, but against Joe being a slow starter I don’t expect him to see the bell to start the third round. If Weaver survived the early rounds, he could be competitive with Louis (to some degree) and maybe made the distance. Against an older Joe like the one who fought Walcott and Ezzard, I could actually see either Mike or James pulling the upset.
The Louis that looked shaky against Walcott, could definitely get in trouble against guys like that. They hit a lot harder than Jersey Joe for sure.
