Prime for prime. Can Cooney catch Haye early or does Haye’s speed/reflexes allow him to avoid the early onslaught of Gerry and land a huge shot of his own? Who wins this probably short, action packed fight?
Haye is far more proven and versatile, he’d outbox him, land lead right and lead left hooks, he’d read Cooney’s attacks and may stop him late on.
While I did vote for Cooney by knockout, I must admit that I’m surprised at how one sided the poll and comments are in favor of Cooney. Mostly because it seems as though I recall reading so many posts over the years about how overrated Cooney is and such. I guess like with all fighters on this forum, there are peaks and valleys with regards to how they are viewed. Cooney must be experiencing a peak on the forum currently.
Haye by KO. His foot speed would allow for him to get away from and duck Cooney's big swings, and his own explosive power would detonate on Cooney's chin. Haye could survive a bomb or two and would be too elusive for Cooney to be able to track down and finish even if he hurt Haye. Haye by KO within 7-8 rounds.
Example of somebody trying and failing to track Haye down? Larry had to fight Cooney off him round after round , so you're saying Haye had better legs than Larry?
Haye is just more proven IMO. I do think Cooney had the goods from the neck down. The Holmes fight, the hoopla and the defeat, seemed to exacerbate his mental/substance issues, and that was all she wrote.
Wladmir and Valuev both couldn't track down and stop Haye, he was able to use his feet all night. Haye was a little quicker and more mobile than the Holmes who fought Cooney in terms of pure footwork, yes I'd say that.
Before the Holmes fight Cooney walks all over Haye. After the Holmes fight it may go the other way but that isn't a certainty. It is worth pointing out that David Haye lacks things that made Foreman successful against Cooney in their fight. And you would have to be somewhat out of touch with reality to assert that David Haye is the equal of Michael Spinks.
Wlad never once tried to track down Haye. He played it safe on the outside. It was advantageous to Haye's ambush style if Wlad tried to walk him down. Haye went to the ropes numerous times to set traps and Wlad never once took the bait. Valuev ?? Are you actually being serious right now.. End of career immobile 300 pound statue Valuev ?? Valuev couldn't catch a turtle FFS. No he simply was not. Haye had fast hands and quick upper body movement , but his footwork was poor. He wrestled and fought Chisora off him all night before the haymakers landed. Even the ghost of Ruiz had no problem getting near him. Haye never displayed the fleet footedness of Larry Holmes. The aggression Cooney went after Larry with would not be evaded by Haye. Its possible Haye lands a sneaky counter in battle. But Cooney being unable to find Haye because his footwork was so good is not a reality based perception.
