Douglas wasn't a diamond in rough, Tyson always had problems with that style.

Douglas always had the tools to give Tyson trouble. Big, mobile, good power in his right and a S-tier jab. The jab alone deposited a pretty well-regarded Mike Williams three times and led to the stoppage. Going into the fight it was certainly considered a possibility that it would trouble Tyson...at least for a while.

That said, the main question about Douglas going into the fight was that he found ways to lose fights he could and should have won. Troubling Tyson was one thing- staying focused and capitalizing on that was quite another. Basically, the fight unfolded the way I thought it would till round 8. Once Douglas got over and reassumed control, however, we were in uncharted territory-and so was Mike.

I feel like not enough people know about those pre-pros Catskill spars between Tyson & Lewis.

spoiler alert: Tyson didn't get the best of it. He did beat up Lewis for two rounds on their first day, but then once the Canadian adjusted it was game over.

The blueprint existed as early as the winter of '83/'84, but the D'Amato/Clayton/Jacobs machine kept it hushed until much later.

Half the fighters that tyson battered had the tools to give tyson trouble. The real difference was in them fights tyson was properly training. Then he stopped doing what made him great and started to erode...and then the tools the opponent had made a difference.

Not taking the credit from douglas or the blame from tyson but thats basically what happened. A massive part of Tyson being great was due to the preparation....he needed it more than most due to giving away too much size. When he failed that preparation for too long...he paid the price and douglas capatalised.

Still feel that cus d,mato doesnt quite get enough credit for tyson. He took a guy who was five foot 9 undersized as a heavyweight who was emotionally all over the place and pretty much destroyed the whole division the heavyweight division to boot in ridiculous time with him at 18,19 and 20 years old. Fought mitch green and james tillis at 18. 17 days apart. Pretty much cleaned out most of the division by 21. Still think that era of heavyweight is massively underrated as well. Mainly underrated because he battered them all and they we,re all around the same level outwith tyson.
