Moments when a boxer you know showed up or was mentioned unexpectedly in media

Oceans 11 messed with my memory once, making me swear I'd seen Lewis fight Wlad. I was remembering them as extras in Oceans 11.

As to boxers showing up in bit parts, most of the other ones I could name have been brought up, but I'll give a shout out to James Toney for his portrayal of Joe Frazier in Will Smith's Ali. Did a great in-ring impersonation of Frazier's fighting style. Another good shout out is to Mike Tyson for his fight scene with Donnie Yen in one of the IP Man movies.

By the way, if anybody scans through Mike Tyson's IMDB page... lol. He's in so many foreign or domestic b-movies, and as his scene in IP Man shows, can film a solid movie fight scene. Even if he did accidentally break Donnie Yen's hand during filming -- he threw a punch which Yen was to block, but forget to pull all the steam out of it.

 

That reminds me, I once ran into a local boxer at a supermarket and got his number , so we could talk boxing of course. Sadly I lost it before getting home but I looked his name up on boxrec and he was 2-5 in 7 fights. I genuinely wanted to call, the poor fella must have thought i saw his record and decided not to!

How was John David in person?

 

He was cool, kinda kept to himself but very professional. He wore a t-shirt that said JOHN DAVID JACKSON. His wife's shirt said JOHN DAVID JACKSON'S WIFE. I later worked at a gym in South Seattle just as he was getting into training fighters. He gave me some really good pointers, as we were both southpaws.

 

I met him in Big Bear when he was training Shane Mosley. Very professional guy.

Saw a really old cartoon (30s or 40s) once in which Tunney was parodied as a fish - he was called Gene Tuna, naturally. They might’ve done same to Dempsey in the same cartoon but I can’t quite recall.

 

I’m now a fan, shame what happened with Mighty Jorge Castro.

 

@Pugguy talking about fish reminded me… Jack Dempsey has his own fish, we used to have them in our tank I got them shortly after becoming a boxing fan… @greynotsoold if you were a real Mauler fan you’d have one of these.

Tyson is actually a decent actor..

You know who was a great actor? Jack Roper. He fought Joe Louis for the world title and had a Hollywood career for about 20 years thereafter.

i was about to do a Wikipedia page for hm but sadly was kicked out of the encyclopedia after 21 years for using funny signatures on my messages. i suspect the person who kicked me out also hates transgender people because they tried changing my password to "Jeanlovestrump!"... Yes, the everyrone's encyclopedia now takes itself waaay too seriously.
