At the end of the day they both have to make the weight. If Canelo feels he’s too small he can move down in weight, but if you’re the champion you can’t just arbitrarily decide you’re not gonna fight the top contender in the weight class because you think he’s too big. Well you can if you’re Canelo, but it’s bull****.

Also why did he fight Berlanga’s big ass if weight and height are such a concern? It’s not the size he’s afraid of, he just don’t want it with David Benavidez.

Only jobbers take fights they know they're going to lose.

At the end of the day, if you know there's a particularly high risk of getting badly hurt then you're only going to take that if it pays enough to take that chance... Sometimes journeymen will fight contenders knowing they're going to get squashed, but it's for way more money than they'd be able to get otherwise - so it's tempting.

Where's the motivation for someone like Canelo who is almost always the A-side and draws plenty to take a fight he has limited chance of winning and a good chance of getting hurt?

More relevant here is that Bivol might be big, comparatively, but he's not a heavy puncher... The risk is a loss, not a loss and brain damage - it's not the same.

Bivol already whooped him and showed Canelo his limit. It would be foolish for him to fight Benevidez just to appease people who want to see him lose. A fight people should be calling for is Bivol vs Benevidez.

So, why doesn't Benavidez move up to cruiserweight and fight Opetaia?

Because Canelo is a fearless, tough warrior who likes great challenges.

Or, it was a nothing-to-lose situation for him. He knew his belts weren't on the line. And if he lost, he knew he could just say, Bivol was the bigger guy, at least he dared to be great, etc. Notice how when Bivol wanted the rematch to be at 168 for Canelo's titles, Canelo didn't want any part of it. It's like a free hit, similar to what Crawford is doing now. And what Jermell Charlo did with Canelo, even though he had to vacate one of his four titles to do it.

Its not just losing to Benavidez its the fact that losing to Benavidez would be horrible for Canelos standing and popularity with his mexican and mexican american fanbase

Canelo can lose to Bivol 5 times and it wont matter but if he gets knocked out by Benavidez he loses a big part of his fan base and Canelo fans suddenly become David Benavidez fans

This is a good post minus Mayweather vs Pacquiao.. Mayweather agreed to the fight in 2010 with even giving up a 50/50 split as long as Pacquiao took the USADA drug testing which Pacquiao refused

Only for Pacquiao to agree to the testing in 2015 at a 60/40 rate

That’s a complete non-sequitur. What does this have to do with the Super Middleweight champion refusing to fight the top Super Middleweight contender?

And how do you reconcile this with Canelo fighting a guy who just moved up to 154?

I would say the point still stands if one did/does see it as a duck that more effort wasn't made to make that fight earlier.

But I'll take your point that it's a debatable point.

Benavidez is much bigger than Canelo. Why is it so hard to understand? And he would weigh much more than Canelo in fight night.

Totally agree. It is a risk / reward calculation by Canelo. If he can beat a guy like Berlanga for 65 million dollars it really isn't possible to make the Benavidez fight. I don't see how it could even be considered for less than $200 million.

It sucks for the fans but I think it is probably a trivial business decision to duck Benavidez.
