Will IBO ever become a major sanctioning body?

IBF gained instant recognition by guys like Holmes, Hagler and Spinks holding their belt.

It took 18 years for WBO to become a major sanctioning body.

It's now been 22 years since the inception of IBO. Their belt is still not considered as a major one, despite recognizing true heavyweight champs like Lewis, Wlad, Fury and now Usyk. Their name is being announced every time their title holder is introduced in the ring and is listed on the fight posters.

Do you think IBO will ever break through the glass ceiling? Why hasn't it happened yet?

I sure as hell hope not. I've seen people make fun of the IBO (there was one such with when Eubank won the belt). Fans and even the boxing establishment don't want a fifth sanctioning body, so I do hope that's enough for it to never become one.

I imagine they would be one already, if given the backing and money years ago. The chance has probably gone now, especially in this age, and probably for the better.

Funny how these alphabets work, especially the WBU

...Ricky Hatton 'defended' the WBU multiple times, before beating Kostya for the IBF. The first heavyweight champ was Foreman, the last... Matt Skelton

Turki might buy them and pump enough money into his body the other ones become second class.

Outside of crazy **** like that, no.

For years, the IBO has been carried by champions along with the IBF, WBA, WBO, and WBC belts, so it holds a special place in the hearts of boxing fans.

It's people's sanctioning body. Non profit, no schemes, no mind games.

I think he's trying to do this with The Ring belt now. Which is cool in my eyes, as long as the editorial board still has the final saying in the rankings.

You've used the word 'inception' and it is a lot like that film.

I mean if it somehow does, we'll end up getting 10 more major sanctioning bodies which is the last thing we need.

I dont believe so. I would bet money Turki and Dana White are going to do away with belt orgs altogether, maybe make their own belt or just keep WBC. The rest of the belts are erroneous.

THey don't have enough power to do that. Sanctioning bodies are, if we like it or not, engraved in the tradition of boxing now, so their belt would probably be considered even lower value than IBO for some time and I don't think the OG bodies will go anywhere.

It'd be nice if at least the WBA ceased to exist and the IBO took its place. All four going under and the IBO replacing them would be a dream.

I doubt it, and hope not. What the sport needs is reconsolidation, not further dilution.

If anything it might end getting merged/swallowed into an existing Big 4 entity, and then forgotten about forevermore other than as footnotes and extra sections on Wikipedia lineage pages.

It will never get the official status. With the mandatory system logistically it cannot work with a 5th mouth to feed. It can get to a point where they are recognized like where people mention them when listing the bodies.

An idea I have is make the IBO the official ranking people or something that all 4 major bodies use for their rankings.

I hope not but in recent weeks it has become clear they have a plot and are going to try.

I honestly hope not. One more major boxing sanctioning body means, 17 more opportunities for fighters in the different divisions to claim to be the best in their respective divisions without solidifying themselves as the best in the division by being the only champion of that......division.
