I seem to recall reading a newspaper account of the fight that said Apostoli had to lose a bit of weight @ the weigh-in. The fact that he jumped all the way up to 170 lb immediately afterward also supports the weight being an issue by that time.

Having said that, I also recall reading that Apostoli had looked lackluster in the fight or 2 in between the Conn & Garcia fights, so perhaps the Conn wars + tough schedule right from the outset of his career had taken an early toll on him.

From what I've read, Apostoli gave a decent account of himself in that fight, w/ the KDs being the difference in the scoring. Perhaps if Apostoli still had the cast iron chin from earlier in his career, that outcome may have been different?

Steele #8 and Apostoli #13 for me. Both have under appreciated records.

It was a back and fourth affair with Zale almost stopping him in the mid rounds. By the account of the Seattle Times and Post Intelligencer Apostoli had a good 9th round and was doing well in the tenth until he was knocked down. Fred was still on the floor at a count of 9 when the final bell rung with them reporting he would have been knocked out if the fight had not ended.

You maybe right but perhaps the writing was on the wall before they fought as report(s) of his downfall were coming before the Zale fight. He took a hammering from Bettina in their second fight in February 1940 suffering from the flu after a gruelling twelve rounder in January.

When Apostoli had to drill 20 minutes to take off a hateful half pound in order to make the title mark of 160 pounds, it was plain then that Apostoli was making his last stand as a middleweight.

In fairness to Garcia, reports also attribute his win to better boxing technique & quicker, sharper combos.
