I've never cared about commentators and it has actually no bearing on if I watch a fight or not. Crazy good numbers, and I'm sure it would've been higher if the fight had been earlier. It started around 1am eastern time... and was dozing off in the middle rounds.
I really need better commentary. Boxing has a commentary crisis right now. No one has ever filled the void of the HBO and Showtime commentary teams. ESPN has Joe Tessitore who is good as play by play, but they pair him with Bradley or Ward, who you'd think have better insight but they don't.
I was surprised at that number, Im happy a lot of people watched. Also this definitely gives Terence a bigger profile along with the Kendrick reference in Euphoria.
It's a shame that Crawford is about to turn 38. Probably not a lot of time left in his career to cash out on the new recognition. Floyd was 30 when he fought ODLH. Still, we're finally done with Canelo and that's a great outcome for boxing.
Was it only on Netflix globally or did some countries have a different broadcaster? If only Netflix it’s pretty poor numbers considering Kellermans claim it would be the most watched fight of the last 40 years, it wasn’t even the most watched fight of the last couple of months. May vs Paq had 4.6 million in the US alone at $100 a pop over 10 years ago lol probably like $150-$200 today in real inflation not propaganda inflation. Juicy J and Wlad surely did more with 10 million in Germany alone
Ok. 41 million people. I am a layman here but how did Netflix recoup the costs of what the promoters paid to the fighters? How much money did Netflix itself make?
Consensus is that Kellerman talked too much ... and the less we have to hear his commentary during these fights, the better. I noted elsewhere here on the Forum that I was getting Larry Merchant flashbacks when listening to him. I remember Larry presuming to explain boxing to George Foreman. The best boxing commentators know when to keep their mouth shut....
Crawford-Canelo attracted 36.6 million on the day of the fight, while the rest watched it within a day of the bout. In terms of concurrent streams, Netflix said the fight had a peak of 24 million as opposed to the Tyson Paul peak of 65 million.1 day ago Crawford v Canelo watched by more than 41 million - BBC
Thats awesome, but unfortunately I think most that tuned in didnt come away as being turned on to boxing. Im seeing a ton of mma people that could have been converted by a more exciting fight going on and on now about how boring boxing is. Ive seen a lot of negative reactions to the fight, even by boxing people. So hopefully this wasnt just boxing showing its biggest audience why they wont be tuning in to boxing again.
The fights weren’t terrible, but nothing exciting either. They were very mundane. The main event itself wasn’t too interesting beyond the two names fighting it.
Because of the tribalism involved with MMA and boxing, I think it could've been a fight of the decade candidate, and there'd still be an army of MMA fans saying "they wouldn't last 2 minutes in the Octagon" - it is just how it is, I think. I find MMA ridiculously boring, even the fights that are considered exciting by MMA fans. I appreciate the skill involved, and I do like a lot of the personalities, but I'd never pay for a UFC PPV.
