It's insane. Everyone wants to disparage Mr. Galento. He was a tank. Had a powerful left hook and iron chin. Much like David Tua. They even had similar builds. But we downplay Galento while upholding Tua.

    It’s an outrage, quite simply.

It’s because of his Italian heritage lol. It’s because he was a lazy trainer, poor stamina, not great defense. Galento like Wilder could have been a champion but he was lazy and no one likes those who never teach their potential, he was entertaining as all heck though

Galento would be the ATG in eating contests.

I think someone should build a case for Mr. Galento being the greatest non-lineal-champion Heavyweight in the history of boxing. That will not be me, but somebody really should do that, SOON, before this vendetta gets out of hand.

    Absolutely preposterous statement.

Whoa, people climb over themselves to make excuses for fighters like Roberto Duran and James Toney who ate themselves out of divisions and displayed lazy training habits … their losses never count because they couldn’t be arsed to train. And they’re quite popular.

Tua, hugely popular here, often waddled into the ring whilst weighing in the 240s and 250s. Tony was most often in the 220s and 230s, so had a bit of decorum about it — in fact, he weight-drained down to like 215 for three bouts in a row in 1934 and lost all three, so adjusted his habits to come in at a more robust and effective fighting weight for him.

So there must be more to it with Galento. I’m not aware of bouts where his stamina was a major issue, while Tua and Toney and Roberto all did cost themselves by not being fit.

It’s the difference between being fat (Toney, Roberto, Tua) and just being a whole lotta man (Galento). You can’t fault someone for being a whole lotta man.

Looks like he was dying of exhaustion against Max. You’re right some fighters get it worse than others. I don’t have an explanation for such things. Maybe when it’s overtly obvious

Who's been disparaging Two-Ton Tony? He'll come back and moider da bums!

I've always thought that Tony had got a fair shake on this site. Very entertaining to watch,I should imagine. Made the most of what he had.
