I remember it well. I was 19. Got up in the middle of the night to get the result on Ceefax and the headline on the sports page, 301, said that Lloyd had done it. I think the fight was on tv on the Sunday afternoon. Simpler times maybe but boxing was so much bigger then.
Speaking of Ceefax, I’ll never forget the morning my mum woke me up and told me “Tyson’s been knocked out.” No Sky in our house back then, so I ran straight to page 381. I sat there in disbelief — no way this is real, they must have it wrong. And then, sure enough, the headline scrolled up: “Don King tries to overturn result.” Moments like that stick forever. Simpler times maybe, but as you said boxing felt so much bigger then. Here’s hoping James DeGale can turn back the clock tonight — and not go out like Gavin.
The thing is it’s easy with hindsight to say that Curry was no good, Curry was weight drained and everyone was a bit sh1t. Curry had dismantled Colin Jones and in those days you didn’t see a lot of US boxers unless they came to the Uk . I still think it was a great win and as AJ proved its hard to win in America . It was harder then as the USA was a powerhouse in boxing. Honeygan didn’t go on to greatness but it was a great win and that’s good enough for me.
Not in my book. Fury's win over Klitschko tops the list, and Calzaghe's destruction of Hopkins was better, also. So was Froch's win over Taylor. Curry simply isn't good enough.
Dont know how old you are but you would have to be around at the time to recognise the enormity oy Lloyds win.The fights you mention pale in comparison
Think you're on a wind up mate, Curry was 25-0 (20), and one of the best fighters in the sport, and considering a fight with Hagler at 160. Most definitely not, an overrated win
It was a superb win, in an (oddly) deserted ballroom iirc, maybe it was just seen as a desultory easy knock over job for the supremely talented Curry. Honeyghan clearly hadn't read the script and was coming off some good wins, and in form, his hands weren't as knackered either as they came to be. "He doesn't think it's a damn show, he thinks it's a damn fight"! I think Honeyghan fell in love with power a bit (remember "the bell went ding and I went dong")?! Boxed well against a tough Maurice Blocker, that was a good win. Shame that Curry isn't doing well nowadays
