This fight was weeks away from happening in September of 1984. Who, how and why?

As a side note, in rematches Ive always had the loser of the first bout as a sentimental favorite for some reason. Im not going to say who'd won here because I want to leave it up to you, however. So this sentiment is not to mean I think the loser of the first match will win!

I think Spinks wins again, he outboxed him pretty convincingly and Qawi was unable to assert himself as Spinks hit harder as well, recall he hurt him right at the start. This seemed to make Qawi hesitant. Dwight is a great light heavyweight. Spinks arguably a top 3 all time light heavyweight. Spinks should win a competitive but clear decision again, similar to the 145-140 type scores of the first fight.

The safer pick would be Spinks . I don’t think Qawi was getting better from 1984 onward

I was so hot for this. Qawi claimed some big excuses and i looked forward to a clash that would sort any dispute.

I think Spinks would have decisioned him again but he'd have had to work for it. Qawi had some top performances after fighting Spinks so it's not like he dropped off and nor did Spinks find another level. Spinks fought the perfect fight first time around and if anyone had room for improvement it was Qawi. By the same if he got more aggressive he still have the danger of Spinks horrific ATG power in both mitts.

John, do you remember what excuses Qawi gave postfight for why he was beaten? Just interested to hear.

Per the below Jel. Spinks lost his wife just before the fight as well.

As for Qawi, he had been diagnosed with pneumonia a week before the fight and he was strongly advised not to fight. Qawi was also nursing a damaged septum during the biggest fight of his career.

I’d have to think Spinks does as well or better in a rematch at that time.

After losing to Michael in the spring of 1983, Qawi had only had two more fights by September of 1984 — a split verdict over Johnny Davis (who had lost by majority decision to Dwight previously and was about to start and was about to go on a skid starting with the Qawi rematch) and journeyman Pat Cuello (another decision win).

While Michael also only had two more fights in that span, his were title fights against stronger opposition, and Spinks wasn’t prone to the ups and downs in form that Qawi was.

Dwight scaled 177 1/2 for Davis and never tipped the scales below 180 again and was soon on his way to fighting regularly in the 190s, so making light heavyweight at this point might have been difficult and left him drained for the fight.

We also know, fwiw, that Qawi regressed between his two fights with Holyfield later on, so losing a competitive fight didn’t light a fire under him for a rematch. I suspect it would be the same with Michael Spinks.

Gimme the Jinx by wide decision or possibly late KO.

I think Dwight would do better in the rematch. Spinks by SD.
