Yeah, I think there's a strong case based on Canelo being ranked P4P No.1 for 2.5 years. As if it were solid consensus that he was the best fighter in the sport. When in reality or in retrospect I don't think he was top 5, perhaps not even top 10 on ability.

Joshua's more beatable than Canelo P4P but he was never rated top 10 P4P, let alone No.1. So it should be a closer debate than it is.

Many/most still claim Canelo is an ATG, despite failing to legitimately defeat any of his best five opponents in the minds of many or most observers, the only ranked P4P fighters he's fought. Joshua is 0-2 in that respect.

Canelo arguably only ever lost to the best (and Lara was 50-50). Joshua's lost to the best and two other guys who were top 5-10 level.

Not sure how you can label a fighter who's held multiple world titles in one division as a hypejob. And they both did it multiple times.

My goodness, the logic that's been pushed in these thread lately......

I don’t know about hype jobs but they’re probably my two least favourite boxers of the current era for different reasons.
Canelo for his ageing out of Golovkin, for being the Mexican mayweather in fight negotiations, being juiced to the gills, for his fans saying he was in the conversation as greatest Mexican ever, etc.

Joshua for his weird fake bad man / stay humble personality, excuses, and overratedness before Ruiz and Usyk beat him.

Definitely Joshua, worse than they portrayed him to be, was dominant against past prime fighters...

Neither, both AJ and Canelo were world champions, won some lost some.

Both for the most part did their fighting in the squared circle, rather than trying to trash talk and think they were comically entertaining.

Like or dislike Canelo, Big Red always eventually stepped up and dared to be great. Ole Big Red quickly, after GGG, decided he was a middleweight and then even a LHW. I’m not a fan of some of the stall tactics Canelo used years ago but he more than proved himself and his point that he can and will step up and outside his comfort zone.
AJ tried but that chin always got him caught slipping and Canelo never been KTFO

AJ as the ginger does at least have 1 ATG trait which is his chin. Joshua has no elite traits

I cannot stand this kind of language when talking about world championship caliber boxers. For the most part, the phrase hype-job is just a dog whistle to signal how you just dislike a fighter. Were both men possibly overrated respective to their ability at certain points of their career? By some, yes. Does that diminish the fact both are legitimate world champions, one a unified world champion, the other a 4-weight world champion who was the lineal champion in 3 of those divisions? No, of course not. If a guy is being touted as the next big thing without any real success at world level, then I guess I could see where someone might be coming from, like a prospect who never managed to put it all together. But to call world champions hype-jobs is just absurd. The amount of talent, skill, and dedication to the sport you need to make it to world level is insane. Most folks calling world champs hype-jobs and bums couldn't even do a solid 3 minutes on the bag. It's just a toxic, negative rhetoric which accomplishes nothing other than diminishing the careers of men who are in the top 0.2% of the boxers competing on the planet.

Hype jobs. Imagine getting to the top of your profession only to be called a hype job cause you are not the absolute best.

Of the two Joshua but I don't see either of them as hype jobs. Yes they received a lot of hype and they didn't live up to it but part of that was they achieved so much and set such a high bar because of what they achieved. Both proved themselves to be elite fighters, they just were not the very best of their era.

Most fighters don't live up to the hype or expectations of the fans or pundits, is Mike Tyson a hype job, George Foreman a hype job because they were both seen as invincible but lost to underdogs? Obviously not. I see hype jobs as fighters that get hyped but do nothing to warrant the hype both Joshua and Canelo deserved the hype they fought good fighters on the way up and looked good in victory a genuine hype job fights bums and gets called a future ATG and the never proves he's even elite.

And then look at the individuals calling you the hype job. Notice how none of them has done anything to warrant hype.....

For all those saying AJ, you’ve then got to give massive credit to Hearn and Matchroom for potentially the greatest promotion and marketing job ever done on a fighter?

If you think either of these are a “hypejob” you’re stupid..

With that said, they both could certainly be considered overhyped at times during their careers.

Someone like Broner who was seen as a future p4p star who ended up around B level in his divisions is a better candidate for being called a hype job…

Not a consensus top 10 pound for pound and unified champion, and a long standing top 3 of his respective division..
