Although these four didn't fight each other the same way the Four Kings of the 80s, these guys to me were the standouts during their era and weight class. How would you rank them in terms of being the greater fighter historically (legacy, H2H, resume) and just being a fan of? Mine would be: Greatness: 1. Jones 2. Hopkins 3. Toney 4. Nunn Favorite Fighter: 1. Toney 2. Nunn 3. Jones 4. Hopkins
Their greatness is pretty much set in stone, I'll rank them on h2h ability at 160 instead. 1. RJJ 2. Nunn 3. Hopkins 4. Toney(extremely inconsistent) Favorite fighter: 1. RJJ. 2. Nunn 3. 4. Toney/Hopkins are both insufferable and racist, I dislike both of them.
Greatness (assuming that this not restricted to 160): 1. Jones 2. Toney 3. Hopkins 4. Nunn I rank Toney over Hopkins because he has the better single wins/performances. However, Hopkins has obviously been more consistent over many years. It is a matter what you prefer. Favourite fighters 1. Toney 2. Hopkins 3. Nunn 4. Roy Jones
I really wish we’d seen Toney vs Jones for real, not the dehydrated version of JT people want so badly to be “Prime” to hype Roy… I think he’d have punched “with” Roy and been totally unafraid and ignored his routine, great bout a true 50-50. Hopkins was a very winnable fight for James too… this is just my 0.2$ but the thing about JT not showing up is a fact.
I have a reputation as a fan of Toney but I’m only a fan of Toney the fighter, to me he is the last of guys like Moore, Robinson, Conn and Walcott etc … JT (Hopkins too) is not a gentleman id keep company with, that is without a pedigree in wrestling or ji-jitsu lol.
Apologies if this is 'hopping on' a thread - but so many fights could have been made: G-Man Julian Jackson Nigel Benn Chris Eubank Michael Watson I know this will get slated as the UK fighters are looked down upon, but that's a strong mix around the middleweight division.
Greatness: 1. Jones 2. Toney 3. Hopkins 4. Nunn Favorite Fighter: 1. Jones 2. Toney 3. Nunn 4. Hopkins
All great fighters no doubt, another name that belongs there is the great Mike McCallum. Loved his fights with Watson and Jackson.
I met these three, The former two were very nice, specially Nunn. Toney...as Dirty Dan implies, Not very nice. He signed for me but as my dad remarked that day, it looked like he only wanted to sign my autograph because there was (another) woman next to him lol!
The 90s was another golden era for the Middleweights. I remember all the great fights we saw on Showtime and HBO plus Fanklie Lyles, jorge Castro, William Joppy and Steve Little also around that weight!
