Would Toney get revenge at the higher weight?
    Could he replicate Tarver?
Or does Jones always have his number?

Personally I think this could be Toney night.
His Counterpunching, iron chin and patience wins him it.
Jones would be just surviving and not dazzling by the end, giving James a close but unanimous decision.

    Really ?

Toney lost to the unremarkable Thadzi at Light Heavyweight and got outpointed by Griffin twice at Light Heavyweight.

Light Heavyweight was objectively Toney's worst weightclass and he never did anything really stand out at the weight.

There's not a snowballs chance in hell Toney would beat RJJ at Light Heavyweight.

    Yep I really do mate.
think Toney would be up for this fight, far more than Griffin.,who was an awkward bugger anyway.
Jones relied on reflexes,he was definitely slowing at light heavyweight.
I think this would be James night.

I simply don't see Toney beating Jones Jr. at Lt. heavy , prior
to Jones foray into the heavyweight division. Maybe after
Jones run at heavyweight, because he was severely diminished
    physically after it.

Toney's best opportunity of beating Jones Jr. was at super middleweight ,
where they fought, and he was completely outclassed.

I don't see how you think that TBH.

Not only is RJJ a stylistic nightmare for Toney you're talking about this fight taking place at objectively Toney's worst weightclass.

Even if Toney is motivated for RJJ he isn't beating him at Light Heavyweight stylistically RJJ is all wrong for him.

And why wouldn't of Toney been motivated for RJJ when they actually fought at Super Middleweight ? That was the biggest fight of Toney's life and he still couldn't sort out his weight issues.

Toney was not motivated when he was fighting at Light Heavyweight and seemed to be going through the motions I can't fathom Toney beating RJJ at Light Heavyweight.

Unless you're talking about a shot version of RJJ at Light Heavyweight but the RJJ that poleaxed Griffin, Hill, would beat Toney 12-0.

Toney went quiet between the Jones fight in 94 and Jirov in 03, really. Sometimes seen looking chubby between fights etc

A repeat. Their first fight was a one-sided whitewash. Toney couldn't hang with Jones on his best day.

Toney would imo be absolutely motivated for a fight with jones.imo here.

I'm just going to have to disagree with you here mate.
I really give Toney a shot.
More so here than if they fought at super middle, I think Toney would have been more effective here.
    Just my opinion Dp

Interestingly, HBO was building up a Jones-Toney II fight in 1996. Toney - Griffin II was on HBO. But Toney lost that fight and then also the Jones rematch fell through. If the judges would have done their job right in the Griffin rematch, we might have actually seen the Jones rematch.

I would agree with Fergy that Toney would have been motivated like never before for that rematch. he really wanted that rematch, claiming that he was not right for their first fight. I would still have favoured Jones at 175. There is always the chance that Toney catches him wwith something big but Jones would be the favourite. At 190 Toney is more likely to win though IMO.

I’d still go with Jones as long as it’s before about 2003. Gaining weight to fight Ruiz and then dropping it all within less than a year permanently destroyed him.

Hey Ferg it’s a very hard bout to predict for me, I’ll say this and get flak… RJJ didn’t have Toney’s number and we never saw them fight for real, in my opinion it should occur to people that it’s quite obvious… folks on the scene and I don’t want to say too much because I don’t have the right as the people who told me aren’t here…but JT was blatantly weight drained and “out” entertaining night life for a fact, it’s not an excuse it’s just what happened. Toney looked like somebody else, how he fought was baffling with all the symptoms of issues at the scales (again a fact) RJJ was an extra terrestrial athlete but he wasn’t THAT good I have a chuckle whenever I hear “oh it’s because RJJ made him look like that” :sisi1 I don’t like JT the person, I really like RJJ the person and am (shocking revelation lol) a bigger fan of RJJ but this grinds my gears. I suspect RJJ was very grateful for not having to fight Toney in 96-97 as by then it’s known the G-man vs Benn clash effected Roy, JT would be there to FIGHT in a way RJJ never had to deal with, Jirov was still ahead of Toney and if the sleeping giant woke… JT was a guy who’d punch with Roy and strip his speed, not fear his power, match him in many attributes and a guy who could inside fight like nobody else besides JCC Snr in his era. I don’t take pleasure in saying this but JT likely beats RJJ and the inside fighting would look one way, though I expect the conversation to be lively at every other range.

I can’t see Toney being defeated if he’s fully motivated and enters camp a low enough bodyweight. We saw him at his best v McCallum (1), Barkley and Littles when he had perfect fight camps by all accounts and was slightly lighter than usual in the ring on the nights (body not supercompensating from starving himself). That Toney probably isn’t defeatable.

He had points to prove against McCallum (1) and Barkley with people writing him off after disinterested displays (Johnson, Tiberi), and faced with adversity vs unbeaten Littles with the cut we saw what he can produce!

Looking back I don't think Toney would ever be busy enough to beat Roy
