...yes, it's that Jayson Vélez. The guy that challenged Evgeny Gradovich for the IBF world featherweight title once upon a time (nearly eleven years ago) and held the champ to a draw.

"La Maravilla", now 37 years old, is on a 1-14 slump and has lost his last eleven straight. He's being fed to a 26 year old southpaw with a 6-1 record in KKW.

IB funfact: Vélez's number of professional defeats (19) is the same as Williams' number of pro rounds boxed.

To his credit, however, the ornery Puerto Rican veteran has rarely ever been stopped - just 5x in 50 bouts, and the first didn't come until pretty deep into his career (losing against Óscar Valdez via TKO10 in 2020)

 

It's startling how steeply JV's career fell off after having a very strong 2017-2019 run. (wins over unbeaten Alberto Mercado, Juan Manuel López, Orlando Cruz and Victor Terrazas - and extending a young Ryan García the full ten round distance for the first time in a UD loss)

He was 29-5-1 in the first twelve years of his career; and now 1-14 in the last six.

 

Bernstein thinks Williams has an injured hand - probably lessening the already low chance of him getting the stoppage with just a couple of rounds to go.

Vélez has never really been hurt, although Bernstein mistakenly thought he was stunned in round three (he really was just hit from behind while spinning off balance, and recovered very quickly)

 

50-45 Williams, dominating with just lateral movement and right hooks (it's his left that's damaged)

 

Vélez in addition to his large oblong noggin has very thick neck muscles, which probably contributes a lot to his punch resistance and longevity in the ring (being able to hang in there and go rounds more often than not, even long after his offensive abilities have faded)

 

Vélez is s strange looking individual...like a cross between Ricky Starks and Carel Struycken.

Bernstein and Haynesworth both think Vélez earned the last round on pure hustle. I'd agree... a pyrrhic victory to avoid getting shut out.
