For my money, there's a contradiction in this post... What it matters is that losing position and getting rusty is the exact OPPOSITE of trying to "become a world champion", nor does stagnating with crap fights make for the biggest draws.
I used to think the same. But in this day and age it isn't like that any more. Boxers on the way up need to play the ABC game and protect their ranking. It's the only way to level yourself into a title shot if you're a legitimate threat.
I disagree - Hrgovic lost position by hiding, he might've been able to maintain it if he'd remained active... Likewise, I suspect Kabayel lost plenty of ranking places during him bumfighting run after Chisora.
But with the ABC you dont lose the places. Both are knocking on the door. You either play the ABC game or you make yourself relevant. But if you want to leave a legacy you need to ensure the goal is to be champion.
