Only just watched this for the first time. Anyone else seen it? Really good one, great to see all the story again. Starting from Seeing clips of Cus and Rooney. Tyson coming to the UK to watch Bruno smacking the hell out of Tillis, sat with Honeyghan. And the build up to Frank meeting Tyson in Oct 88 at Wembley. Then of course Tyson s life takes a downward spiral. The car crash,Givens ripping in to Tyson whilst he's sat there saying nothing. Great documentary, very nostalgic. Back when there was an interest like no other in boxing.
I'm British myself, and only 25 so forgive me here. It does impress and surprise me that Frank Bruno was actually really well known in the UK back then. Probably more so than Lennox in fact.
Yes, Bruno came along a few years before Lewis even turned Pro. He was the most exciting British heavyweight to come along for years. He was actually seen as the Man to bring the title home. The losses to Smith and Witherspoon were heartbreaking for fan's, big Frank had been doing so well against both men. The Tyson fight in 89 was massive and I mean massive over here. Everyone and their dog was talking about it. Frank was the good guy going in,polite and hardworking, even a lot of the US fans wanted Frank to win. He obviously lost but he came back an hero. He'd gone in and actually wobbled Tyson (briefly but you take what you can against Tyson),and didn't get sent crashing to the canvas.
For those at the time, how big a shock would it have been. I’ve not seen the fight but know he rocked Tyson. Comparatively, would you put it on a scale of similar odds to Hatton beating Mayweather? Was it very much a foregone conclusion, more due to the Tyson effect?
Bruno was given a much smaller chance for Tyson 1, than Hatton was vs Mayweather. It was a shock to most that Bruno made it beyond the first couple of rounds.
Didn't matter who went in against Tyson, they weren't given a chance. There were quite a few giving Hatton a chance.
