Whats up with people overrating Chris Byrd?

I don’t think he’s overrated or underrated. He fought the best guys of his era or at least the vast majority that he could get fights with. Beat a good handful of ranked opponents. Was a world champion. And as already commented on did this in an era of very large men.

Byrd was a great fighter , period .. to go from super middleweight and be a legit threat at heavyweight in an era of super heavyweights is astonishing ... the said Lennox Lewis ducked no one and anyone using Byrd as an argument for that is either airbrushing history or naive ...

He went up by choice .. he easily could have fought at light heavy and cruiser. He made the decision for the money.

 

Why? Vitali, Tua and Holy are not harder opponents for a similarly sized man to beat than Hopkins, Toney and Ruiz?

 

Byrd and RJJ are not similar size.

Byrd was fighting as a Heavyweight in his 4th professional fight and was easily averaging over 210 pounds.

RJJ didn't move up to Light Heavyweight until his 31st professional fight and his highest recorded weight was 193 pounds vs Ruiz.

So i would say Byrd is naturally bigger than RJJ by a considerable margin and carries the weight alot better.

As for the opponents.

RJJ of the Ruiz fight would beat the 40 year old version of Holyfield that Byrd beat.

RJJ would definitely not beat Vitali.

RJJ would probably make Tua look silly for a few rounds with his speed until he gets caught.

But again you're pitting RJJ against Heavyweights when he never weighed above 200 pounds in his career.

Also here's a picture of Byrd at Heavyweight now you tell me if they look similar in size.

He's a natural super middle, though. It was artificial weight, and the poor nutrition cost him later in life.

 

He's definitely not a natural Super Middleweight look at that picture I sent of Byrd at Heavyweight he looks in great shape and carries the weight very well.

I know he fought in the Amateurs as a Middleweight but when he turned pro he was already fighting at Light Heavyweight near enough and quickly put on 30 pounds and was a Heavyweight by his 3rd or 4th professional fight.

Put it this way how do you think RJJ would look at 210 pounds ?

 

I can't lol. This is such a wild take I just can't.

 

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. It is a fact that he originally did not intend to fight heavy, started out at LHW 171, and ate very poorly in order to gain enough weight to be a credible middle. He easily could have gone down instead of up.

 

Again, why?

Roy Jones won his medal at light middle
Chris Bryd won his medal at middle

Jones won titles through the ranks
Byrd was so good, that he virtually started at heavy and beat men that would literally have killed Jones

Why is Byrd not great?
