@Redbeard7 Minimizing the Lebedev win is just straight trolling. Lebedev was a very good cruiserweight on a dominant long run of world title wins. Who cares about having better losses. Yeah Hunter has better wins at HW than this poor HW version of Gassiev, but had Gassiev had fought Hunter at Cruiserweight he would have likely have knocked him the **** out! Gassiev was an animal at Cruiser make no mistake about that. Like I said, this version of Gassiev has regressed massively for whatever reason. Probably a mixture of all the injury problems and being too small for HW. Maybe there's some things behind the scenes that we don't know about. Watch the performances and compare, at HW it's like a completely lesser version in there. He was an A Level Cruiserweight and now he's a C/D Level Heavyweight. And it's nothing to do with strength of divisions because the Cruiserweight division he was in was stronger than the Heavyweight division is now.
Based on what? Between the two I'm more impressed with the guys Gassiev kod. Wilder didn't stop guys renowned for durability
These were the odds for Usyk/Gassiev, and yes, Vegas is more unbiased than every poster on this fight and gets it right more often than any poster on this fight. As the fight approached, betting became nearly a "pick 'em." Some sportsbooks had Gassiev as a slight favorite around -115 and Usyk at -105. Other sources indicate odds as close as Usyk at -110 and Gassiev at -105.
A small plodder with a high guard seems like just the kind of guy for Wilder to detonate his right hand on..
What happens when Gassiev hits him back? Wilder has stopped exactly one ranked opponent at heavyweight.
I’m not sure, but the guys who have stopped Wilder aren’t exactly of similar stature to Gassiev, not to mention the visible decline post Fury trilogy…
It's factual that Lebedev was practically a blown up LHW who had lost (albeit controversially) to Huck and G. Jones and was getting old. KO artist Gassiev outpointed him. Good cruiser but does this level of performance translate well to HW? I'd say not. Hence we don't see many making waves up there. Losing 12-0 suggests a lower level of ability than losing 9-3 or 7-5. I suspect Hunter would have beaten Gassiev at CW or HW. He's got more height and reach, much more mobile, better boxer from range and tough, never been stopped. Gassiev hasn't stopped many of his best opponents (Usyk, Wallin, Lebedev, Dorticos) and only stopped Dorticos in the dying seconds because he was walking onto shots all night. I give Gassiev the benefit of the doubt over Okolie largely due to the latter's illegal style and over Noel Gevor due to his lack of power and virtual inability to get a close decision.
People will say Gassiev was largely a one-trick pony who was over reliant on his power, and his struggles at HW were due to his power being less of a factor, but in my view the truth is much more nuanced than that. Yes as a boxer Gassiev has his deficiencies, slow feet being chief amongst them, but IMO Gassiev's boxing ability severely degraded over the years due to injuries and inactivity. When operating at CW he was a much better boxer, more intelligent with his punch selection, better at cutting the ring off, and better educated in the way he applied pressure. I don't think a simple front-foot forward brawler would have beaten Lebedev and Dorticos, who are educated boxers themselves. Yes Usyk boxed his ears off, but given Usyk's demonstrated quality that is hardly a black mark on any boxer.
I would easily rate Dorticos a top 10 heavyweight at his best. Wouldn't be surprised if he beat Wilder frankly. It's a stupid argument because Gassiev had little opportunity to fight ranked opponents at heavyweight. I would favor him to stop plenty. To believe he couldn't stop a top 10 heavyweight of recent years you would have to believe he couldn't stop the likes of Chris Arreola, Mike Perez, Adam Kownacki, Bryant Jennings, Glazkov, Whyte, Stiverne, and a totally shot Chagaev. That seems like a hard sell to me. Even worse a totally shot Haye was ranked in 2016. How would he fail to kayo 2016 Haye?
Another fatty that could probably fight at LHW. A bit like Chagaev. He had a good punch, I guess that's it. A good fight for him would be Ruiz.
Wilder is the guy with multiple stoppage losses. Id say he's far more likely to get sparked out. Fury couldn't stop Wallin but that didn't prevent him from stipping Wilder twice.
A wrecking machine at cruiser, average at heavy. It happens, happened to Adamek, Gomez, Cunningham, Mormeck, Jirov and Haye to a degree. Probably still has the 2nd best resume at behind Usyk among cruiserweights of the last decade or so.
