Usyk is the most consistent fighter I've ever seen. He shows up at his best ever single time. He may have a slow start sometimes that's about it, but that's him downloading the data, he soon has his opponent worked out When you look at the other greats of recent times they all had off nights. Unbelievable fighter
He was only 1 bad round away from a draw with Briedis. Hard to call that an off night because prime Briedis was a great fighter. But Usyk is just a man like every other fighter and can be beaten.
But it wasn't an off night. it was a clear 7-5 victory against a great fighter. He performed at his best as always. 'just a man like every other fighter and can be beaten'... Up until now there is no evidence of that. Like when he was losing the Fury 1 fight or when Joshua 2 was starting to get close, I just KNEW Usyk would up the gears and get the victory. No other fighter in history has the ability to adapt to anything like Usyk does, and no one has been as consistent.
Easier to have less off nights when you only have 24 pro fights. Most fighters have double that at his age.
Fury beat him, chisora beat him, Dubois ko5 him, and bellew knocked him out. Anybody human can be beat - even by a lesser fighter. I won’t count 24 pro fights against him tho, they were mostly quality fights for a fighter who turned pro quite late after an extensive amateur career.
No fighter is totally consistent: Usyk will have been more dialed in for some fights than others (when he was the underdog vs Joshua 1 and Fury 1 for example, as opposed to when he was a significant favourite against Briedis or Chisora). Some opponents would have been underestimated, or not fought with optimised pre-fight tactics. In some cases Usyk may have deliberately "underperformed" (by choosing a more defensive strategy, fighting within himself, or even taking a few shots deliberately) in order to increase underestimation and bait potential opponents. But Usyk's consistency has been superior to any other HW I can think of. Discipline is a huge part of this, intelligence helps too.
He definetely wasn't at 100% in the 2nd AJ bout. Expected him to turn up with an extra gear and do a better job but he didn't just sort of cruised to a win. Got a little cocky against Dubious to let that boydshot cripple him, ref saved him.
Most fighters haven’t had in the region of 300 amateur fights, against the world’s best and won Olympic, World and numerous other titles, either!
