Just a question please, how is someone who has had 13 world title fights and champion for 7 years. Beat Mugabi, Duran, Hearns, Rolden, Hamscho, Minter, etc, be overrated, I still put Jones above him P4P , but Hagler is an ATG
yeah but he did it. p4p rankings naturally tend to guys who fought at higher weight classes. i don't have a bad word to say about hagler but that doesn't mean a guy can't be rated higher at a specific thing.
People are almost afraid to criticise Hagler. Very cool guy but fact of the matter is his career is mostly just beating merely “good” fighters, going to war with Mugabi, beating an old lightweight and a guy with so-so record at 160, and losing to a retired, older SRL with a barely-functioning eye. All while never leaving middleweight. RJJ literally DOMINATED prime Toney, moved up to HW and beat John Ruiz for the title, you can argue their legacy at 160 lbs but p4p isn’t even a question, in fact Im not sure what can top a middleweight beating a heavyweight champion in that category.
@slipperypete said he was a “tad” overrated not flat out and he is, most folks for some reason won’t criticise Hagler? There is a fair bit to say and @SouthpawsRule covered it roughly.
Yes I probably did not read it right, I was not having a go, still Jones is one of the best P4P ever if not the No1
So, was it not the real Toneywho faced Tiberi, Thadzi, Griffin twice and drew against Sanderline Williams? He was what his record shows he was. And that was not as good as Roy, as proven in the best, most scientific method possible... in the ring. If his genius and ability needs to be buoyed by a litany of excuses perhaps it is really not there to begin with.
You can leave sir, I’ll see you in the next Walcott thread whatever I write you’ll just hit me with a “Har Har Tiberi” like last time I tried. Close minded geezer.
I'm not into interpretive judgement of fighter's abilities. I like to look at what they did inside the ring. And Toney was great, without a doubt a first ballot HOF'er... just not as great as Jones.
A win that impresses me more is the Virgil Hill fight. Hill came in prepared and motivated. He was never stopped before. That is really an underrated win for Roy Jones IMO. I know DM beat Hill before, but there Hill was coming off a long lay off and was not 100% due to injury.
