this was a very good fight, I remember Maidana showing a lot of vulnerability, especially to the body. Combined with Khan dropping him to the body made me think Broner would counter there and wear Maidana down and win. Boy was I wrong

Random notes because I did not write round-by-round commentary:

To start this fight Holmes emerged upright and fluid – he’s only an inch taller, but in their stances, it looks like he has an extra foot of reach. Holmes’ jab landed well through the first few rounds, and honestly was the weapon that defined most of this match imo, though Norton’s cross-guard was also effective. Through the first half of the fight Norton really only caught Holmes at all when he chose to make Herculean forward surges like a violent wave. Norton seemed content in the first five rounds to just potshot, with Holmes jabbing around him and occasionally choosing moments to launch a well-timed onslaught of whipping shots, usually in the last 20 seconds or so.

Larry Holmes was gliding, smooth electricity, while Norton was stomping, hunting fire. An elemental battle. Larry’s jab was more present, as I mentioned above, while Norton seemed to be waiting to be in place to throw it.

It is hard not to see Ali in Holmes in this fight: a young, energetic Ali, before the lethargy of accumulated violence had sapped his body of the strength it would need to stand up to the greatness of his spirit. Holmes still has that early-Ali buoyancy, like he catches the current of impending destruction itself, and the hammer of the enemy only lifts him higher in his pursuit of self-expressed excellence. It is beautiful, and what has kept me coming back to boxing. To see it in others; to pursue it in myself. Norton is nothing if not persistent, and even more than that, singularly durable. The ease with which he brushes aside Holmes’ offense is inspiring, though so is Holmes’ energy in constantly seeking a new position, a new angle, a new angle from which to pepper jabs and hope for the moment to throw his right, as Norton shuffles after him, shredded and dangerous, all the powers of destruction tethered to his body. Norton is more effective when he lifts himself out of that menacing shell, when he doesn’t just stalk in half-patient, half-reluctant darkness looking to assert himself in a singular act of violence. Towards the last third of the fight he seems to unfold from himself, straightening up, extending his arms more, throwing more. Was he waiting for the right moment? I feel like he gave up a lot of rounds with that waiting. I think Norton would have won if he just threw more jabs. Isn’t that how he beat Ali?

Nothing to say about the last three rounds that has not been said a hundred times before. Truly a gift to watch these two men fight.

I loved Archie's artistry here. The video has no sound and no decision. I was somewhat surprised to find out on Boxrec that it was a draw!

Archie is one of my top ten of all time. I had him win, 118-110. Maybe I was too biased? Oakland Billy still gave him a battle! You should see Archie's right eye at the end!

I felt like a trainer wathing a video with a boxer to explore the rival's weaknessees...lol
