He thought Liston was on his way to being the greatest of all time. You can hear it if you watch the video.

You are entitled to your opinion, Louis and Liston were friends and boxers generally say a lot which is why I don’t enjoy “the quote game” But to credit it, before Louis and up to SL there was not much to pick from… Mr 49-0? Patterson? Charles? Etc bygone times or wee sized guys. I actually could understand why Liston would look so promising Sonny was the prototype for “true HW’s” but off the assembly line came monsters like Ali, Tyson, Holyfield, Usyk etc what would Louis say of them? Muhammad Ali has called Louis and Johnson both “The Greatest” so it’s not hard to flip it. Liston was good for his time but no HW “ATG” next to perhaps Jeff? has benefitted more from superior physicality and got so far with relatively pedestrian boxing. SL looks impressive fighting opponents who’d be 168-175lbs today but against an Ali, Holmes, Lennox, Vitali etc I don’t like his chances the way I do with Louis, Louis had the best pure boxing skills of any HW and is good odds in all those bouts Liston is a relic, you wouldn’t watch Sonny to learn to box. I’d pick Louis to beat Liston 8/10 times via KO he can box at every range better it isn’t worth getting into how the fight goes I just can’t see a case for SL such is the gulf.

The world just needs us all to do a little more heroin together? - Louis mostly leeched off Sonny as I’ve read of there relationship? asking for money frequently, just having Sonny pay his way on things, Louis I believe was a greeter by the time they became buddies? - IDK I believe Louis was late to his funeral gambling and basically said “oh he’d understand” or something,

 

I'm getting second-hand embarrassment reading this.
I’ve interacted with you in two threads and mentioned you once in another thread in the span of two months—hardly the behavior of someone obsessed or "mad" at you, so maybe ease up on the melodrama.

 

Brother you’ve been saying the same S for 4-ish years now, many times over your only contribution to a thread is to be indirectly snarky to me. Don’t be coy lol. Just let it go.

 

Almost none of my posts have anything to do with you, so maybe stop reading into things that aren’t there. I’m not continuing this conversation—I have zero interest in derailing the thread. You have a history of starting personal arguments that are irrelevant to the thread or boxing, so if that’s what you want to do again, you’re back on my ignore list. If you want to actually discuss boxing, great.

 

No this was not like someone saying something nice to exaggerate the ability of someone they like. This was Louis saying he thought Liston was better than any heavyweight of alltime. So this was not about his friendship he was saying Sonny was not only better than him but also Jeffries Johnson Dempsey Marciano etc you name it. No had he not believed that but just wanted to compliment a friend there were many other ways to do that. Listen to it it’s publicly available for anyone to see and hear.
